TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State saw its second half rally fall short in a 74-68 conference road loss at Chico State this evening at the Wildcat's Art Acker Gymnasium.
Jeremiah Jones led the way for the Warriors with a game high 22 points (his twentieth straight game scoring double figures).
Lloyd French tied his season high with 14 points off bench while
Daniel Ameyaw recorded his second consecutive double-double and third of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
FIRST HALF: JoJo Murphy's trey 13 minutes into the game gave Chico State, who were receiving votes in the latest NABC/NCAA Division II poll, a 19-6 lead. The Wildcats increased their lead to 29-17 on a trey by Caden Harris with six minutes left in the half. Stan State (9-12, 6-9 CCAA) finished the half on a 9-2 run capped by a
Jeremiah Jones' lay-up off a
Jonathan Tchengang steal cut the Warrior deficit to 31-26 heading into the second half.
SECOND HALF: Chico State (16-5, 12-3 CCAA) started the second half outscoring the Warriors 10-4 to take a 41-30 lead in the first five minutes of the new half. Stan State cut its deficit to 42-37 at the 13:58 mark of the second stanza on a
Jeremiah Jones' lay-up. The Wildcats increased their lead back to ten (49-39) at the 12:55 mark. A
Jason Cibull trey off a
Daniel Ameyaw assist capped a 17-5 run by the Warriors as they took a 56-54 lead with eight minutes left in regulation. The game went back and forth in the next two minutes with a
Daniel Ameyaw lay-up off a Wiliam Chavarin assist to give the visitors a 60-58 lead. Chico State outscored the Warriors. Chico outscored the Warriors 7-4 to take a 67-62 lead with just two minutes on the clock. An old-fashioned three-point play by Jones cut the Stan State deficit to 67-63. Two free throws by Isaiah Kerry increased the host' lead to 74-66 with just eleven ticks to go in regulation. An Ameyaw tip-in made the final 74-68.
TWENTIETH STRAIGHT: Jeremiah Jones scored 22 points to lead Stan State this evening for his twentieth straight game scoring in double digits. This was his seventh game of scoring 20-points or more this season. He is averaging 18.7 points per game this season while shooting 47% from the field and 89.4% from the charity stripe.
THIRD DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Daniel Ameyaw recorded his second consecutive double-double and third of the season this evening. He scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his sixth career double-double. He went six-for-eight from the field to go with his season high three assists.
TIED SEASON HIGH: Lloyd French tied his season high tonight with 14 points off the bench. He went five-for-ten from the field including connecting on two of his five attempts from three-point land and a perfect two-for-two from the line. French added a season high seven rebounds to go with his one assist and one steal in 26 minutes off the bench.
29% Stan State held the Wildcat to just 29.6% shooting from three-point land as Chico State went eight-for-27 from beyond the arc. For the season, the Wildcats shoot 34.8% from treys.
BENCH: The Warriors' bench outscored Chico's bench 26-14 led by
Lloyd French's 14 points.
Jason Cibull and
William Chavarin each chipped in six points for the guests.
HALF: Stan State had 12 assists on its 24 field goals made this evening.
Daniel Ameyaw and
Jason Cibull each had three assists with
Cameron Walker dishing out two. Four Warriors had one assist apiece in
Jeremiah Jones,
Lloyd French,
William Chavarin, and
Mahda Fallay.
ONE-GAME OUT: With their loss this evening, Stan State is in a tie for eighth place and one game out of sixth place in the CCAA regular season standings with its 6-9 CCAA record. Cal Poly Pomona and San Francisco State are tied for sixth place each at 7-8. The Warriors are two games out of fifth place (Cal State East Bay, 8-7), three out of third place (Cal Poly Humboldt and Cal State San Bernardino each at 9-6. No. 23 Cal State Dominguez Hills is in first place at 14-1 followed by Chico State at 12-3.
UP NEXT: The Warriors continue their Northern California road trip this Saturday, February 8 at 5:00 p.m. in Arcata, Calif., for a CCAA game with Cal Poly Humboldt. The Lumberjacks defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 95-94 in double overtime in Arcata this evening. Earlier this season in Turlock, Calif., Stan State defeated Humboldt 72-58 behind
Jason Cibull's season high 17 points. After Saturday's game in Arcata, Stan State will return home to host No. 23 Cal State Dominguez Hills (Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m.) in the Warriors' Homecoming Game. The Warriors will host Cal State Los Angeles (Feb. 14, 3:00 p.m.) on Alumni Day.
