ARCATA, Calif.--- The visiting Stan State Warriors rallied from a ten-point deficit with nine minutes to go to defeat the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks 65-62 this evening at Lumberjack Arena. The Warriors outscored Humboldt 24-11 in the final minutes to key their three-point come-from-behind victory.
Jeremiah Jones scored the game's final three points from the line to secure the Stan State road victory. The senior guard finished the night with a game high 23 points, his 21
st straight game of scoring in double digits.
FIRST HALF: Cal Poly Humboldt (13-8, 9-7 CCAA) jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first six minutes of the game.
Lloyd French's trey off a
Jeremiah Jones' assist capped a 6-0 run by the Warriors as they took a 11-10 lead. In the next ten minutes, Humboldt outscored Stan State 21-9 to takea. 31-20 lead with two minutes left in the half. The visitors finished the half outscoring the 'Jacks 6-2 capped by a Jones' lay-up to cut the Humboldt lead to 33-26 heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Back-to-back lay-ups by
Jeremiah Jones to begin the second half for Stan State (10-12, 7-9 CCAA) cut its deficit to 33-30 in the first minute of the new half. A Rob Diaz dunk gave the Lumberjacks a 51-41 lead with nine minutes to go in the game. Wiliam Chavarin's lay-up capped a 15-4 run by the guests as they cut the hosts' lead to 55-51 at the four-minute mark of the second half. Diaz's lay-up at the 3:45 mark gave Humboldt a 58-55 lead. Jones' jumper capped a 7-2 run by Stan State as the Warriors took a 62-60 lead with a little under a minute to go in regulation. Humboldt retook the lead on two free throws by Kalib LaCount. Jones scored the final three points of the game all on free throws to give Stan State the 65-62 come-from-behind victory.
FOUR-WAY TIE FOR SIXTH PLACE: With just six games left in the regular season, Stan State is in a three-way tie for sixth place in the CCAA with Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Los Angeles, and San Francisco State. The top four teams are No. 23 Cal State Dominguez Hills (15-1), Chico State (13-3), Cal State San Bernardino (9-7), and Cal Poly Humboldt (9-7). Cal State East Bay sits in fifth place at 8-8 followed by the Warriors, Broncos, Golden Eagles, and Gators. The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the CCAA Basketball Tournament Championships, March 6-8 at Cal State San Marcos.
ANOTHER SERIES SWEEP: With Stan State defeating Cal Poly Humboldt this evening, the Warriors swept the season series from the Jacks. This is the third season sweep for the Warriors as they also swept Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.
ONCE AGAIN: For the second consecutive game, Stan State's bench outscored its opponents. This evening it was by a 19-5 advantage led by
William Chavarin's six points.
Mahda Fallay and
Fabian Reichstadt each scored four points.
Lloyd French added three points and
Jason Cibull had two points.
WON THE BATTLE OF THE BOARDS: The Warriors won the battle of the board this 36-29. Stan State had 11 offensive rebounds with 25 defensive boards. Three Warriors grabbed six rebounds each in
Daniel Ameyaw,
Cameron Walker, and
William Chavarin.
Jonathan Tchengang grabbed five rebounds while
Lloyd French had four.
21ST STRAIGHT GAME: Jeremiah Jones recorded his 21
st straight game of scoring in double digits tonight with a game high 23 points. This was his eighth game and second in a row of scoring at least 20 points. For the season, he is averaging 18.9 points per game and his career he has scored 775 points.
UP NEXT: Stan State will return home for a pair of CCAA games, February 13 and 15. The Warriors will host CCAA leader and No. 23 Cal State Dominguez Hills this Thursday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. in their Annual Homecoming Game. Two days later, Stan State will host Cal State Los Angeles on Alumni Day at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15.
