CSUSM Takes Two from Warriors in Weather Shortened Series

SAN MARCOS, Calif.---  In what was supposed to be a weekend four-game series, the rain in Southern California forced Stan State to play just a doubleheader at Cal State San Marcos this afternoon.  In the doubleheader, the Warriors were swept by the Cougars 6-3 and 6-1 in the two nine-inning games.  Stan State will be off until the Warriors hosts San Francisco State, March 28-30 in a four-game series beginning with a 6:00 p.m. nine-inning game on Friday, March 28.

GAME ONE:  Stan State (10-14, 5-9 CCAA) took the 1-0 lead on a one-out solo home run by Arthur Navarette, Jr., his second of the season.  Alex Solis drew a one-out walk and went to third on a Flavio Perez single.  Solis scored when Robert Valdivia reached on a bunt single to double the Warriors' lead to 2-0.

Cal State San Marcos tied the game at 2-2 on a two-out two-run double by Mateo Lane in its half of the first.  The Cougars took a 4-2 lead on a two-run two-out single by Ethan Rivera in the CSUSM half of the third.  The hosts doubled their lead with a two-run fourth to take a 6-2 lead.

The Warriors had a chance to break into the Cougar lead in the top of the seventh.  Ryan Leonesio reached on a one-out throwing error.  He went to second on a walk to Jacob Baker.  With two outs, both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch.  CSUSM's reliever Trevor Eby induced the next Warrior to ground out to end the Stan State scoring threat.

Stan State did cut into the deficit in its half of the eighth.  Perez had a lead-off double.  With one out, Luke Davies and Austin Sargent drew back-to-back walks to load the bases.  Still with one out and the bases loaded, Danny Murphy drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Perez with Stan State' third run of the game.  Cougar reliever, Trevor Brouse, induced the next two Stan State batters to fly out to short and strike to preserve the CSUSM 6-3 lead.

In the Warrior half of the ninth, Solis reached on a one-out error.  He was stranded there as Brouse induced the final two batters to strike out and ground out as CSUSM took the 6-3 game one victory.

MULTIPLE-HITS:  Flavio Perez and Danny Murphy went a combined four-for-eight with a run batted in and run scored.  Murphy drove in one of Stan State's three runs with Perez scoring one of the three Warriors' victories.

ROSEN:  Cameron Rosen pitched a season high 5.1 innings today in relief in game one.  He gave up three hits and two runs while striking out three and walking two.

GAME TWO: Cal State San Marcos (10-9, 5-5 CCAA) took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Phoenix Sommay led off the inning being hit by a pitch.  He later came around to score when Garrett Teunissen grounded into a double play.

The hosts increased their lead to 4-0 with a three-run fifth inning.  They added an insurance run on a two-out run scoring single by Sommay to give CSUSM a 5-0 lead.

Stan State scored its run in the top of the seventh.  With two outs, Tyler Van Dyk had a pinch hit single up the middle.  He was pinch ran for by JD Madrigal. Ryan Leonesio singled with two-out which Madrigal went to second.  Still with two outs, Jacob Baker drove in Madrigal with a double to left field to cut the Warrior deficit to 5-1.  The next Stan State batter struck out to end the Warrior scoring threat.

Cal State San Marcos added another insurance run in the bottom of the eight to take a 6-1 lead. Stan State was retired in order in the top of the ninth as the Cougars took the night cap 6-1.

MULTIPLE HITS:  Ryan Leonesio had two of the Warriors' seven hits as he went two-for-three.  The other six hits were by Jacob Baker, Alex Solis, Flavio Perez, Luke Davies, and Tyler Van Dyk.

WARRIOR RELIEVERS: Stan State duo of Noah Chelberg and Zach Geiss combined to pitch three innings of relief, giving up three hits and two runs.

19/15:  Flavio Perez had hits in both ends of the doubleheader today to increase his hitting streak to 15.  He now has reached base safely in 18 straight games.

UP NEXT:  Stan State is off until the weekend of March 28-30 when the Warriors host San Francisco State in a four-game series at Warrior Field.  The two teams will play a 6:00 p.m. starting single game on Friday, March 28.  The series will continue with a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 29.  Stan State will play the series finale with the Gators on Sunday, March 30 with a noon starting single game.
