TURLOCK, Calif.-- The visiting San Francisco State took this evening's series opener with the Stan State Warriors, 18-0, at Warrior Field in Turlock, Calif. The two teams will continue the CCAA four-game series tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader in Turlock. This will be Little League Day as all little leaguers wearing their team's jersey will be admitted free to the doubleheader.
The SF State Gators looked like they were going to take the early lead in their first at bat. They had the first two runners on, but the Warrior starter
Austin Balentine induced the next two Gator batters to foul out to left field and to ground into an inning-ending double play.
SF State (16-13, 12-9 CCAA) scored six runs in its half of the second inning on just two hits to take the early 6-0 lead. Michael Cunningham's two-out three-run home run was the key hit of the inning for the visitors. The Gators added five more runs in the top of the fourth take a 11-0 lead. They added seven more runs in the four innings to increase their lead to 18-0.
Robert Valdivia had the Warriors' hit, a lead-off single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Nathan Shinn (5-2) picked up the win for the Gators in relief with Anthony Alvarez recording the no-decision in the start.
13TH GAME: Stan State (12-17, 5-10 CCAA) had its 13
th game without an error this evening. Heading ingot this weekend, the Warriors were tied for first in the nation in fielding percentage. The Warriors have a .985 fielding percentage heading into the final three games of this weekend's series.
GREGORY: Greyson Gregory was one of four Warriors to pitch this evening. The senior pitcher pitched a scoreless ninth. He walked just one batter and hit one Gator while facing five batters.
STREAK SNAPPED: The Warriors are now 3-1 under the lights after tonight's loss to San Francisco State. Their previous three victories were a 10-1 victory over Saint Martin's, a 7-2 victory over Cal State San Bernardino, and a 5-4 walk-off victory in eleven innings over Cal State Los Angeles.
