TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State split its doubleheader with the visiting San Francisco State Gators taking game one 16-11 before falling 11-2 in the night cap.
Ryan Leonesio went a combined four-for-five with three runs batted in and four runs scored to lead the Warriors.
Flavio Perez had four hits in the opener and
Alex Solis had four combined hits in the doubleheader.
Patrick Sweeney picked up the win in the opener with
Noah Chelberg recording his first save.
GAME ONE: SF State gook a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Warriors tied the game at 1-1 with a run in their half of the second. Alex had a lead-off single and later scored on a two-out run double by
Ryan Leonesio. The Gators came right back and tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the top of the third.
Stan State (11-16, 6-11 CCAA) retook the lead, 3-2, with a two-run third.
Jonluke Goldman had a lead-off single and went to third on a
Flavio Perez double. Goldman scored on a sacrifice fly by
Arthur Navarette Jr. The Warriors took the 3-2 lead on a two-out run scoring single by
Danny Murphy. The Warriors increased their lead to 6-2 with on a two-out three-run home run by Navarette in the Warriors half of the fourth.
The Gators tied the game at 6-6 with a four-run fifth. Stan State retook the lead, 9-6, in its half of the fifth for good. Solis had a lead-off single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Murphy. He went to third on
Jacob Baker's single. Leonesio reached base on a bunt single which both Solis and Baker scored on a throwing error by the Gators. Leonesio scored on a run scoring single by
Robert Valdivia.
The hosts added four more runs in the sixth to increase their lead to 13-6 with a four-run sixth. Perez had a lead-off single and went to second on a two-out single by Solis. Still with two outs, Murphy loaded the bases being hit by a pitch. Baker had a two-run single to bring in Perez and Solis. They added two more runs on a two-out single by Leonesio.
SF State didn't go away as the Gators trimmed the Warrior lead to 13-8 with a two-run seventh on a two-out two-run pinch hit double by AJ Schrader. The Warriors took a 14-8 lead with a run in their half of the seventh.
The Gators scored three more runs in the eighth on a one-out three-run home run by Daniel Murrillo to cut the hosts' lead to 14-11. Stan State responded with a two-run eighth. Murphy had a lead-off single. He went to second on a passed ball. With one out, Leonesio walked. Each Warrior advanced a base on a stolen base. They scored on a two-run one-out single by Valdivia to take a 16-11 into the ninth inning.
Noah Chelberg held the Gators scoreless in the top of the ninth to preserve the 16-11 Warrior victory for his first save of the season.
20 HITS: Stan State had twenty hits in the opener today led by
Flavio Perez's four-for-five game with three runs scored.
Ryan Leonesio went three-for-three with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Jonluke Golman had three hits and scored twice.
Alex Solis added three hits, and three runs scored.
Danny Murphy and
Robert Valdivia went a combined four-for-ten with four runs batted in and two runs scored.
Arthur Navarette Jr. had four runs batted in with three coming on a three-run home run.
FIRSTS: Patrick Sweeney improved to 1-2 with the win in relief. He gave up seven hits and five runs while striking out two in three innings of relief pitching.
Noah Chelberg pitched 1.2 scoreless innings for his first save of the season. The senior reliever gave up just one hit and struck out one.
GAME TWO: SF State (17-14, 13-10 CCAA) took a 3-0 lead with a three-run second in the night cap. The Gators increased their lead to 5-0 on a one-out two-run home run by Justin Johnson. The visitors increased their lead to 9-0 with a four-run fourth. Johnson's two-out three-run home run keyed the inning for SF State.
Stan State cut the deficit to 9-2 with a two-run fifth inning.
Ryan Leonesio had a lead-off single followed by a walk to
Robert Valdivia. They each advanced a base on a wild pitch. Leonesio scored on a Gator wild pitch. Valdivia scored the Warriors' second run on a ground out by
Jonluke Goldman. SF State took a 11-2 lead with a two-run sixth inning to take the 11-2 night cap.
MORRIS/RASMUSSEN: LaKeal Morris and
Reid Rasmussen pitched a combined 3.1 innings of relief, giving up seven hits, two runs while striking out three and walking two. Rasmussen pitched a scoreless eighth for the Warriors.
MOVIN' ON UP: Alex Solis now has 49 career doubles at Stan State as he is the record holder for the Warriors in double in the NCAA DII ERA. He is fourth with his 179 hits and tenth with his 92 runs scored.
Ryan Leonesio is one stolen base from moving into the top ten list.
