Baseball Scores a Season High 15 Runs on a Season High 22 Hits in Series Finale Victory

CARSON, Calif.--  Stan State defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 15-4 to capture this afternoon's series finale with the Toros at Toro Field in Carson, Calif. The duo of Ryan Leonesio and Arthur Navarette Jr., went a combined 10-for-11 with two runs batted in and four runs scored.  Three Warriors also had multiple-hit games in Jacob Baker, Alex Solis, and Robert Valdivia.
 
Stan State (8-10, 3-5 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  Robert Valdivia had a lead-off double and scored on a two-out single by JD Madrigal.  The Warriors doubled their lead in the second.  Jacob Baker reached on a fielder's choice, went to third on a two-out double by Ryan Leonesio.  Baker scored on a run scoring single by Valdivia to give Stan State a 2-0 lead.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run third inning.  Stan State retook the lead in its half of the fourth.  Madrigal was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and went to second on a single by Arthur Navarette Jr.  Each Warrior advanced a base on a Danny Murphy sacrifice bunt.  With one out, Baker was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Leonesio had a successful bunt single to bring in Madrigal with the Warriors' third run of the game.  Baker scored on a two-out runs scoring single by Valdivia as the guests took a 4-2 lead.
 
The Toros (9-7, 6-2 CCAA) cut the Warrior lead to 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. 
 
Stan State added another run in the fifth.  Tyler Van Dyk drew a one-out walk and scored on a two-out single by Navarette to give the guests a 5-3 lead.
 
The Warriors broke the game open up with a five-run seventh to take a 10-3 lead. CSUDH scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Warrior lead to 10-4. 
 
In the Warrior eighth, Navarette had a lead-off single went to second when Murphy walked.  They each advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Baker.  Leonesio singled to load the bases.  Still with one out, Navarette scored on a Valdivia single and Murphy scored on a Flavio Perez sacrifice fly to give Stan State a 12-4 lead.
 
The guests added three more runs in their half of the ninth.  Van Dyk had a lead-off double and that was followed by a walk to Madrigal.  Navarette singled to load the bases.  With one out, Van Dyk scored on a balk.  Baker hit a one-out two-run single to bring in Navarette and Madrigral and give Stan State a 15-4 lead.

The Toros didn't a score a run in their half of the ninth as Stan State took the 15-4 series finale.
 
PITCHERS:  Caleb Bertoncini (2-1) picked up the win in relief, pitching four innings, giving up one run and a hit while striking out two and walking two.  Noah Chelberg pitched two scoreless innings of relief, while striking out one and giving up two hits.  Zach Geiss pitched the first three innings to record the no-decision in the start.
 
22 HITS:  Of Stan State's 22 hits, five were doubles one each by Robert Valdivia, Tyler Van Dyk, Arthur Navarette Jr., Jacob Baker, and Ryan Leonesio.  Leonesio and Navarette each had five hits while Baker and Valdivia each had three.  Alex Solis also had a multiple-hit game with two hits.

UP NEXT:  Stan State returns home this weekend, March 7-9, to host Cal State Los Angeles in a four-game series at Warrior Field.  The series will begin with a 6:00 p.m. game this Friday, March 7.  The two teams will play a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader this Saturday, March 8.  They will conclude the series a week from today at noon.  After next Sunday's series finale, Stan State will return to the road for a four-game series at Cal State San Marcos (March 14-16).
