Warriors Begin Weekend Series with Walk-Off 5-4 Victory over Cal State Los Angeles

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Arthur Navarette Jr., hit the second he pitched he saw for a walk-off single to bring in Jacob Reyes with the game-winning run in Stan State's 5-4 extra-inning victory to begin the weekend's four-game CCAA series with Cal State Los Angeles.  Reyes finished the game three-for-four with a run scored for the victors.  Zach Geiss (3-0) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up no hits, walking one, and striking out two. 

Stan State (9-10, 4-5 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead with a two-run second inning.  Flavio Perez had a lead-off double and went to third on a wild pitch.  Perez scored when Danny Murphy had a successful suicide squeeze bunt.  Murphy went to second on a single by Jacob Baker. Still with one out, Jacob Reyes hit a single to load the bases.  Ryan Leonesio doubled the Warrior lead on a ground out to second to bring in Murphy.

Cal State Los Angeles (5-10, 2-3 CCAA) came right back with a four-run third inning keyed by a two-run single by Carson Panarisi as the Golden Eagles took a 4-2 lead.

The game remained 4-2 visitors until the Warrior half of the sixth.  JD Madrigal had a lead-off home run to begin the sixth for his third home run of the season.  Murphy followed that with a single and scored on a Baker double to left center to tie the game at 4-4 for the hosts.

The series opener went into extra innings tied at 4-4.  Reyes had a lead-off single to right field in the top of the eleventh.  He went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Leonesio.  With one out, Arthur Navarette Jr. hit the second pitch he saw for a walk-off single to right field which brought in Reyes for the game-winning run as Stan State took the series opener, 5-4.

TRIO OF SCORELESS RELIEF PITCHERS:  Stan State's trio of relief pitchers in Noah Chelberg, Cameron Rosen, and Zach Geiss combined to pitch 8.2 scoreless innings of relief while giving up eight hits, walking one, and striking out six.  Geiss picked up the win by pitching 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits, striking out two and walking one.

WHAT A START:  In his first start of the season at shortstop by the hosts, Jacob Reyes went three-for-four with a run scored and a sacrifice hit.  Reyes scored the game-winning run on a walk-off single by Arthurt Navarette Jr.

14 HITS:  Stan State had 14 hits in the series opener.  Four Warriors had at least two hits in Alex Solis (three), Jacob Baker (three), Jacob Reyes (three), and Arthur Navarette Jr. The Warriors had four extra-base hits including a solo home run by JD Madrigal.  The other three extra base-hits were doubles by Solis, Flavio Perez, and Jacob Baker.

THIRD WALK-OFF:  Tonight's walk-off 5-4 victory over Cal State Los Angeles was Stan State's third walk-off victory this season.  This was the second one that Arthur Navarette Jr., delivered the game-winning hit.  The first one came in Stan State's 3-2 victory in ten innings over Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 16.  The third was a 5-4 walk-off win in nine innings over then No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino on Feb . 22.  This time Jonluke Goldman drove in Danny Murphy with the game-winning run.

UP NEXT:  Stan State and Cal State Los Angeles will play a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 8 to continue the four-game series.  The series will conclude with a noon starting game this Sunday, March 9.
