Warriors Close Bay Area Road Weekend at Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif.--- Stan State closed its Bay Area road weekend with a 25-23, 25-23, 25-19 loss to Cal State East Bay Saturday evening at Pioneer Gymnasium. Maggie Olson led the Warriors with 10 kills, marking her third consecutive match with double-digit kills for the first time in her career and her fifth double-digit kill performance of the season, while Sydney Hoffman finished with six kills without an error on 10 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage.

Stan State moved to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in the CCAA, while Cal State East Bay improved to 6-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Saturday's match came one week after the Warriors defeated the Pioneers in five sets, 27-25, 10-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-6, during the CCAA Pod Weekend in Turlock. That match did not count toward the CCAA standings.

Olson finished with 10 kills on 26 attempts and hit .269. Hoffman added a solo block to her six kills, while Fallon Freeman had seven kills and five digs. Reagan Wilkerson finished with 26 assists and a team-high eight digs.  The Warriors finished with 38 kills, while Cal State East Bay had 45. The Pioneers hit .286 for the match, including .438 in the third set, while finishing with four service aces and four total blocks.

First Set
Stan State held the advantage for much of a tightly contested opening set. Freeman had four early kills as the Warriors built a 12-9 lead, and Olson later gave Stan State a 16-15 advantage with a kill.

The Warriors led 21-19 following a Cal State East Bay attack error, but the Pioneers responded with four consecutive points to take a 23-21 lead. Olson's fourth kill of the set pulled Stan State within 23-22, and Hoffman fought off a set point with a kill to make it 24-23. Cal State East Bay answered with the final point for a 25-23 victory.

Olson and Freeman each had four kills in the set, with Olson hitting .400 and Freeman .333. The opening frame featured nine ties and three lead changes.

Second Set
The second set was even tighter, featuring 16 ties and seven lead changes. Stan State held an early 7-4 advantage and later took a 16-14 lead on Paige Taylor's service ace.

Neither team was able to create much separation until Stan State scored consecutive points to take a 22-20 advantage. Cal State East Bay responded with four straight points to move ahead 24-22. The Warriors fought off one set point before the Pioneers closed out another 25-23 victory.

Hoffman had three kills without an error on four attempts and hit .750 in the set. Stan State also recorded all three of its blocks in the second frame.

Third Set
Cal State East Bay jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set before Stan State attempted to work its way back. The Pioneers eventually extended their advantage to 16-9.

The Warriors continued to battle and used a late push to cut the deficit to 21-18. Freeman had two kills during the run, while Olson added two of her four third-set kills. Cal State East Bay answered, however, scoring four of the final five points to take the set 25-19 and complete the match.

Stan State had 14 kills and hit a match-best .294 in the third set, but Cal State East Bay countered with 18 kills and a .438 hitting percentage.
