Stan State Opens NorCal Crossover with Narrow Loss

TRACY, Calif. — Stan State opened the NorCal Crossover on Friday morning with a 4-3 loss to RV Northwest Nazarene at the Tracy Sports Complex.

GAME ONE: RV Northwest Nazarene 4, Stan State 3

Northwest Nazarene (11-5) capitalized on early opportunities, scoring two runs in the first inning on a two-out RBI single. The Nighthawks added two more in the third with back-to-back run-scoring hits to take a 4-0 advantage.

Stan State (7-4) responded in the fifth inning. After a hit-by-pitch and consecutive singles set the table, Katelyn Bridgeman delivered a clutch two-RBI double to center field to cut the deficit to 4-2. Addie Meddings followed with an RBI single to pull the Warriors within one.

The Warriors mounted another threat in the seventh inning. Moxie Barton led off with a bunt single, and Ava Montesdeoca and Malia Babasa followed with base hits to load the bases with two outs. However, Northwest Nazarene escaped the jam to secure the one-run victory.

Bridgeman finished with two RBIs, while Babasa recorded two hits. Meddings added two hits and an RBI as Stan State outhit the Nighthawks 7-4.

Alexandria Himes took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs while limiting Northwest Nazarene to four hits. The Warriors did not allow a run after the third inning.

GAME TWO: Western Washington 7, Stan State 2

Stan State returned to the field Friday afternoon but fell 7-2 to Western Washington in the second game of the NorCal Crossover.

Western Washington (8-7) struck first with a run in the opening inning before the Warriors answered in the bottom half. Ava Montesdeoca walked and stole second, and after advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, she scored on an RBI groundout by Marley Hogue to tie the game at 1-1.

The Vikings regained control in the third inning with two runs on four hits to take a 3-1 lead. Stan State responded in the bottom of the frame when Katrina Rodriguez singled home a run after the Warriors loaded the bases, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Western Washington broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on a pair of RBI hits and capitalizing on a defensive miscue to extend the lead to 6-2. The Vikings added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double.

Stan State had opportunities late, recording five hits in the contest and putting runners aboard in multiple innings. Katelyn Bridgeman finished with two hits, while Rodriguez drove in a run. Moxie Barton added a bunt single as the Warriors pressured the defense with small ball throughout the afternoon.

Nat Camarena took the loss in the circle. The Warriors combined for five hits and left multiple runners on base as they dropped the second game of the day.

UP NEXT

Stan State continues play at the NorCal Crossover on Saturday at the Tracy Sports Complex with two games on Field #2. The Warriors will face Central Washington at 9:00 a.m. before taking on Montana State Billings at 11:30 a.m.

Central Washington enters Saturday after splitting its Friday contests, falling 8-2 to Menlo before earning a 10-8 win over Cal Poly Humboldt. The Wildcats also dropped a 6-0 decision to No. 1 Cal State San Marcos.

Montana State Billings comes into Saturday following an 8-0 run-rule victory over Menlo on Friday afternoon.

Stan State will look to bounce back and build momentum heading into the final day of tournament play.
