Baseball Battles in Opener Before Dropping Doubleheader to Golden Eagles

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Stan State dropped both games of Saturday's CCAA doubleheader to Cal State Los Angeles, falling 13-10 in the opener before an 11-1 loss in the nightcap at Reeder Field.

The Warriors are now 12-12 overall and 3-4 in CCAA play, while the Golden Eagles improve to 14-10 overall and 4-3 in conference action.

In game one, Stan State battled back multiple times but Cal State Los Angeles rallied late to claim a 13-10 victory.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Stan State tied the game in the third on a two-run double by Zach Lewis that scored Mason Kelley and Chris Ortiz.

Eric Perez evened the score again in the fourth inning with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, before Jacob Reyes scored on a sacrifice by Tyler Crudo to give the Warriors a 4-3 lead.

Cal State Los Angeles responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain a 6-4 advantage, but Stan State again answered. Perez drove in a run with a single in the fifth before the Warriors erupted for five runs in the sixth inning.

Lewis started the rally with a sacrifice fly before Chase Wilson doubled home a run and Eli Hancock added an RBI single. Perez later scored on an error before Reyes doubled to right center to cap the inning and give Stan State a 10-7 lead.

The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to one in the seventh on a two-run home run by Ethan Gonzalez before breaking the game open in the eighth inning. Cal State Los Angeles scored four runs on five hits, highlighted by a two-run single from Adam Axtell and RBI doubles by Kadyn Victorian and Cesar Chavez to secure the 13-10 win.

Jared Robles (3-1) earned the win in relief for Cal State Los Angeles, while Jared Sawyer (0-2) took the loss for Stan State.

Lewis led the Warriors offensively, going 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Perez finished 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, while Hancock added two hits and an RBI as Stan State totaled 13 hits in the opener.

In game two, Stan State struck first in the opening inning when Tyler Crudo tripled and scored on an RBI single by Chris Ortiz to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Cal State Los Angeles answered immediately with a run in the bottom of the first before erupting for seven runs in the second inning and adding three more in the third to build an 11-1 advantage.

Jonathan Manuel led the Golden Eagles both on the mound and at the plate. He earned the win after allowing one run on three hits over 5.2 innings while striking out 10 and also drove in two runs with a double and a single.

Cesar Chavez paced the Cal State Los Angeles offense, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Alberto Prado and Carson Panarisi each drove in two runs.

Rocco Gurrola (1-1) took the loss for Stan State after allowing 10 runs, seven earned, over two innings.

Chase Wilson recorded two of Stan State's four hits in the nightcap, while Crudo and Ortiz accounted for the other two.

Warrior Notables

Zach Lewis went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs in game one to lead the Warriors' offense.

Eric Perez hit his second home run of the season in the opener and finished with two RBIs.

Chase Wilson recorded two hits in game two and finished the doubleheader with three hits.

Up Next

Stan State and Cal State Los Angeles will conclude the four-game CCAA series on Sunday, March 15 at 12:00 p.m. at Reeder Field in Los Angeles. The Warriors will look to earn a series split for the second consecutive weekend. The series finale will feature live stats and streaming available on FloCollege.

The Warriors will then return home to Warrior Baseball Field to host Cal Poly Pomona in a four-game CCAA series March 20–22, beginning with a single game at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20. The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday and concludes Sunday. Next week's series can also be heard on BlueChip Broadcasting.
