TURLOCK, Calif. — Stan State swept Saturday's CCAA doubleheader against Cal Poly Pomona, using a seven-run sixth inning to win the opener 12-7 before
Zach Lewis delivered a walk-off single in a 5-4 nightcap victory at Warrior Baseball Field.
The Warriors improve to 14-14 overall and 5-6 in CCAA play, while Cal Poly Pomona, which is receiving votes nationally, falls to 16-9 overall and 8-3 in conference action.
In game one, Stan State used a seven-run sixth inning to turn a deficit into a 12-7 victory.
Trailing 5-3 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Warriors erupted for seven runs on five hits.
Shane Callison drove in a run with a single before
Jacob Reyes added an RBI on a fielder's choice to tie the game.
Zach Lewis followed with a two-run single to give Stan State the lead, and
Chris Ortiz extended the advantage with a two-run double to right center.
Mason Kelley capped the inning with an RBI single as the Warriors built a 10-5 cushion.
Cal Poly Pomona answered with a two-run home run by Jack Sanders in the seventh to cut the deficit to three, but Stan State responded with two more runs in the bottom half to put the game out of reach.
Ortiz led the offense in the opener, going 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Lewis added two RBIs, while Kelley finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Tyler Crudo reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI, and
AJ Carter scored three runs.
Jared Sawyer (1-2) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.1 innings, while
Pierce Sailer closed the game with two scoreless innings and two strikeouts.
In game two, Stan State battled back and walked it off in the bottom of the ninth for a 5-4 win.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Warriors answered with three runs in the bottom half.
Tyler Crudo and
AJ Carter drew walks before Lewis reached on a bunt single that led to the first run. Kelley followed with a two-run single to give Stan State a 3-2 lead.
The Broncos tied the game in the fifth and took a 4-3 lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Julian Angulo. Stan State answered in the bottom of the inning when
Jacob Reyes reached on an error, moved to third and scored on a wild pitch to even the game at 4-4.
In the ninth, Reyes was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Lewis delivered again, singling through the left side to bring home the winning run and secure the sweep.
Lewis led the way in the nightcap, going 3-for-5 with the walk-off RBI. Kelley added two hits and two RBIs, while
AJ Victoravich (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
Payton Hawkinson allowed three runs (two earned) over six innings in the start.
