SURPRISE, Ariz. – Stan State women's tennis opened the PacWest Championships with a 4-0 loss to No. 25 Azusa Pacific in Wednesday's quarterfinal matchup at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club.
The Cougars gained early control by securing the doubles point. Azusa Pacific earned wins at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles, while the No. 3 pairing of Emi Mikami and Maiah White was in a competitive position, trailing 5-4 when the point was clinched.
Stan State carried that fight into singles play, but Azusa Pacific continued its momentum, earning the three additional points needed to secure the dual. The Cougars picked up straight-set victories at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles to close out the match.
Despite the result, several courts showed competitive stretches for the Warriors. At No. 1 singles, Emma Yu battled through the opening set and held a lead in the second before the match was halted. Maiah White also competed in extended rallies at No. 5, staying within striking distance throughout the match before play was stopped.
Other matches, including No. 5 and No. 6 singles, were left unfinished once Azusa Pacific reached the four-point threshold.
The matchup marked the third meeting between the two teams this season, with Azusa Pacific continuing to show strength at the top of the lineup against a Stan State team that has relied on depth throughout the year.
