ARCATA, Calif.--- Stan State rallied from a two-set deficit to force a deciding fifth set before falling to Cal Poly Humboldt 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 18-25, 15-12 Thursday evening in the CCAA opener for both teams at Lumberjack Arena.
The Warriors (3-5, 0-1 CCAA) dropped the opening two sets before responding with victories in the third and fourth to extend the match. Cal Poly Humboldt improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA.
Maggie Olson led Stan State with 12 kills and hit .370, while
Fallon Freeman finished with 10 kills.
Soraya Forbes recorded seven kills on 12 attempts for a team-best .417 hitting percentage.
Lauren Hamilton had eight kills and six solo blocks, while
Rylee Szyszka led the Warriors with 22 digs.
Ireland Avalos recorded 26 assists and 11 digs for her second double-double as a Warrior.
Lauren Gonzales added nine kills and 12 digs.
First Set
Cal Poly Humboldt took a tightly contested opening set 25-22. The frame featured six ties and two lead changes, with neither team able to create much separation early. Stan State finished with 10 kills and hit .114, while Humboldt recorded 13 kills and hit .137 to take the 1-0 match lead.
Second Set
The Lumberjacks extended their advantage with a 25-19 victory in the second set. Humboldt turned in its best offensive set of the match with 16 kills and a .233 hitting percentage. Stan State finished with eight kills and five attack errors while hitting .071 as the Lumberjacks took a 2-0 lead.
Third Set
Facing a two-set deficit, Stan State responded with a 25-23 victory to extend the match. The set featured four ties and three lead changes as the Warriors recorded a match-high 16 kills. Stan State held off Humboldt down the stretch to cut the Lumberjacks' advantage to 2-1.
Fourth Set
The Warriors continued their comeback with a 25-18 victory to force a fifth set. Stan State produced its best offensive set of the night, recording 12 kills with only three errors and hitting .237. The Warriors also held Humboldt to a .071 hitting percentage to even the match at two sets apiece.
Fifth Set
The deciding set featured eight ties and two lead changes before Humboldt prevailed 15-12. Stan State and Humboldt battled back and forth throughout the frame, but the Lumberjacks finished with 11 kills and hit .206 compared to seven kills and a .097 hitting percentage for the Warriors. Humboldt closed out the set to deny Stan State's comeback and take the CCAA opener in five.
