TURLOCK, Calif.--- Hugo Canedo and
Emmanuel Duran each scored their first goals of the season, while
Dylan Isasi recorded five saves as Stan State closed non-conference play with a 2-0 shutout victory over Dominican Saturday evening at Warrior Stadium.
Canedo put the Warriors in front in the 41st minute off assists from
Leo Avalos and Duran. Stan State carried the one-goal advantage into halftime before Duran added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute off an assist from
Adrian Yepez.
The Warriors improve to 2-2-2 overall and finish their non-conference schedule with a .500 record. Dominican falls to 0-3-3.
FIRST HALF
Dominican generated the first opportunities of the evening, earning two corner kicks during the opening three minutes before forcing Isasi into three saves in a span of 12 seconds in the 12th minute.
Isasi stopped Norman Tellez at the 11:18 mark before making back-to-back saves on Dominic Bolender at 11:23 and 11:30 to keep the match scoreless.
The Warriors' first attempt on goal came from
Gerardo Flores in the seventh minute, with Dominican goalkeeper Colin Nestor making the save. Duran had an attempt blocked in the 24th minute before sending another shot wide left in the 30th.
Stan State broke through at the 40:21 mark. Canedo scored his first goal of the season off assists from Avalos and Duran to give the Warriors a 1-0 advantage. Dominican immediately looked for an equalizer, but Isasi stopped Sebastian Jaral just 11 seconds after Canedo's goal.
The teams finished the first half even with five shots apiece, but Dominican put four attempts on goal to Stan State's two. Isasi's four saves helped send the Warriors into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
SECOND HALF
Canedo nearly doubled the lead less than three minutes into the second half, putting an attempt on goal that was stopped by Nestor.
Stan State continued to create opportunities as the half progressed.
Cameron Belandres had an attempt blocked in the 59th minute before
Jose Ponce had a shot blocked in the 64th. Yepez put an attempt on frame in the 66th minute that was stopped by Nestor.
The Warriors found their second goal at the 81:08 mark. Yepez set up Duran, who scored his first goal of the season to extend Stan State's lead to 2-0. Dominican made a late push, but Isasi stopped Christian Sotomayor in the 87th minute to preserve his first clean sheet as a Warrior. The Penguins generated three attempts during the final four minutes but were unable to break through.
Dominican finished with a 13-12 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Both teams put five shots on goal, with Isasi stopping all five attempts he faced.

- Dylan Isasi recorded five saves to earn his first clean sheet as a Warrior. He has played all 540 minutes in goal through Stan State's first six matches.
- Hugo Canedo scored his first goal of the season.
- Emmanuel Duran scored his first goal of the season and recorded an assist for three points. Duran now has 11 career goals, moving him into a tie for ninth on Stan State's career goals list with Josh Santillan, Patrick Carey and Rigoberto Gonzalez.
- Adrian Yepez recorded his 12th career assist, moving him into sole possession of third place on Stan State's career assists list. He trails only Samuel Villanueva (17) and Nolan Holdridge (15).
- Leo Avalos recorded his first assist of the season on Canedo's goal.
- The clean sheet was Stan State's first of the season.
- Saturday's victory was the 30th at Stan State for head coach John Powell, making him the third head coach in program history to reach 30 wins. Powell joins Dana Taylor (91) and Eric Mild (42) as the only Stan State men's soccer head coaches to reach the milestone.
- The Warriors finish non-conference play 2-2-2.
- Stan State improves to 2-0-2 at Warrior Stadium this season.
- The Warriors improve to 3-2 in the all-time series against Dominican.

Stan State concludes its six-match home stand next weekend as the Warriors begin CCAA play at Warrior Stadium. Stan State hosts Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. before welcoming Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m.
