TURLOCK — Cal State Stanislaus and Sonoma State battled to a 0-0 tie in women's soccer action, Friday afternoon at Warrior Soccer Field. With the draw, the Warriors are 8-6-2 overall and 6-2-2 in CCAA play, while the Seawolves are 6-6-2 and 2-6-2.
In the first half, the Warriors had trouble creating offensive pressure and were defending the Sonoma attack for much of the first 45 minutes. “Sonoma is a tough team because of their direct style and wanting to kick it over the top and run,” noted head coach Gabe Bolton.
However in the second half and through both overtime periods it was the Warriors controlling the game and creating opportunities. “I thought we definitely dominated the second half and both overtimes,” added Bolton. The Warriors pounded out 13 of their 14 shots after the first half of play and had multiple scoring opportunities. “We created a lot of chances and were just unlucky not to finish,” said Bolton.
It was a physical match with play stopped a few times for injuries. The two teams collected 27 fouls together and Sonoma was issued two cautions.
Jessica Sitarz collected seven saves, as she notched her seventh shutout of the season. Cherie Early tallied four shots.
The Warriors, ranked 8th in the Far West Region, will finish their home schedule Sunday with a CCAA match against Humboldt State at 11:30 a.m. It will be senior day for
Jenna Coates, Cherie Early,
Petra Schaaf and
Kasie Rozario.
