TURLOCK — Warrior head coach Eric Mild finished off a season sweep of his alma mater Sunday afternoon as Cal State Stanislaus came from behind to defeat Humboldt State 2-1 at Warrior Field.
The win accented a day full of festivities for Senior Day during the Warriors' final home game of the season. Seniors
Mando Herrera,
Brice Burtchett, Matt Mouro,
Kishin Hamaguchi,
Alfredo Renteria,
Kyle Lindquist and
Dennis Wolfe were all in the starting lineup, and all contributed to Cal State Stanislaus' win, the second of the season against the Lumberjacks after defeating them in Arcata, 1-0, on Sept. 16.
It was Hamaguchi who sealed the win in the 83rd minute with a goal off of a free kick. The Lumberjacks were called for a foul about five yards from the top of the goalie box. Hamaguchi tucked the ball into the upper right corner to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead that would stand.
Burtchett helped get the Warriors back in the game just 10 minutes earlier when he headed a ball to junior
Ross Crown at the top of the box. Crown dribbled five yards to his right and fired a shot that found the net to tie the score at 1-1. The goal was Crown's first of the season and third of his career.
“At halftime we talked about coming out with more energy because we were a bit flat in the first half and the seniors helped us elevate that energy level,” said Mild. “They definitely responded to the challenge that was issued at halftime. We played better soccer.”
Humboldt took an early 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game when Trel Mangarin received a pass from Jon Eseman. Mangarin outran the Warrior defense and beat Herrera one-on-one for his sixth goal of the year. The score would stay the same through halftime and the Warriors would come out fighting in the second half for the win.
“Our defense was pretty solid today,” said Mild. “I am very proud of the seniors. They were able to earn a victory in their final home game and the last game played on (Warrior Field).”
The Warriors will go on the road for their final three games of the season. On Friday the team visits Carson to face No. 18 Cal State Dominguez Hills. Sunday the Warriors will play against UC San Diego. The Warriors will finish their season on Oct. 27 in Chico against the Wildcats.
