Warriors drop to No. 17 Toros in OT

10/19/2007 10:09:32 PM

Carson -- No. 17 Cal State Dominguez Hills finally found paydirt 3:46 into overtime as Humberto Lopez collected a loose ball deep in visiting Cal State Stanislaus' box, and blasted it far post for a 1-0 win, a victory that gave CSUDH men's soccer head coach Joe Flanagan his 200th career victory at the helm of the men's program.

The Toros got off to a quick start as Sammy Rivas found himself 1v1 with CSUS keeper Mando Herrera at the 5 minute mark, but his blast from 2 feet out sailed both high and wide, keeping zeros on the board early.

Twenty minutes later, Rivas took a feed to the keeper's left from about 15 yards away, but his angled shot bounced off the far cross bar, ricocheted to the near crossbar, and eventually was cleared by a Warrior defender, keeping both teams off the board in the game's first 45 minutes of play.

After intermission, CSUDH again had the first good look in the 60th minute as a give-and-go between Jordan Rover and Mario Guerrero found Jordan in front of the CSUS net, but the Warrior keeper Mando Herrera quickly closed the foot-long gap, causing Rover's shot to sail wide.

A Toro indirect kick in the 68th minute nearly got CSUDH on the board, but a Scott Mariano blast from 25 was punched away by Herrera, keeping the game scoreless.

While regulation proved uneventful for CSUDH, the Toros quickly recovered in overtime as Lopez took a loose ball in the box at 93:46, and beat CSUS' Herrera far post for the game winner.

The Warriors were only credited with five shots with two on frame. Herrera recorded six saves as CSUS dropped to 4-10-3 overall and 3-7-2 in the CCAA. CSUDH is now 13-3 and 9-2 in league in first place of the CCAA South.
