NAMPA, Idaho --
Shristy Kumar scored 25 points and the Warriors turned in a strong first half en route to a 85-79 win over Western Oregon at the NNU Hampton Inn Classic at Northwest Nazarene University's Johnson Sports Center.
Cal State Stanislaus jumped out an 11-point lead six minutes into the contest and built its lead up to 19 points late in the first half for the win over the Wolves. With the win the Warriors improved to 1-3 after opening the season with three straight losses.
"We played with a lot of intensity in the first half and for bits of the second," CSUS head coach Sharon Turner-Dean said. "Overall I am proud of our efforts. It's nice to get the win."
Kumar's layup with 1:55 left to play in the opening half gave Stanislaus a 46-27 advantage. CSUS took a 49-31 lead into intermission after shooting 50 percent from the field. Led by Kumar, the Warriors made 6 of 7 three pointers in the first half. Kumar finished 9 for 14 from the field, including four treys.
Tiare Dvorak scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds,
Aleta Stamps chipped in a career-high 13 points and
Amanda Everett added 10.
Lysandra Williams and
Gwendolyn Page had six rebounds each.
The Warriors were able to overcame another high-turnover game with 30 -- making it three 30-plus turnover games out of four contests.
"We put them on the line so much in the second half that it killed our momentum. That allowed WOU to score without time coming off the clock," Turner-Dean said. "We panicked a little, started to hurry and turned the ball over too much."
Western Oregon (2-2) is led by Leada Berkey who had 36 points on 13 of 21 shooting. She was also 10 for 12 from the free throw line. Katie Torland had 17 points.
Stanislaus opens California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Wednesday when Chico State visit Warrior Arena for a men's and women's doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.
