Turlock – The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team fell to the Chico State Wildcats 75-51, in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams, at Warrior Arena. The Warriors fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA. The Wildcats improve to 5-0 and 1-0 in the CCAA.
Freshman
Katie Busi led the Warriors with 12 points. Gwen Page added seven points in just 11 minutes of action due to foul trouble. Audriana Spencer headed the Wildcat offense with 14 points and she collected seven rebounds.
Chico State, ranked eighth nationally, applied pressure from the onset and was able to open up a 17 point lead late in the first half. The Warriors climbed to within 12 when
Christin Gowan connected on a three pointer just before the halftime buzzer from just in between the halfcourt and three point lines. The Wildcats then went on a 15-6 run to open the second half and stretched the lead to 22 with just under 14 minutes left in the game. The Wildcats would open up the deficit to as much as 29 and the Warriors could never cut it closer than 17. This was the Warriors tenth straight loss to Chico, who was picked to finish third in the CCAA coaches poll.
Again, the Warriors continue to hurt themselves with turnovers and poor shooting. They committed 27 turnovers and shot just 26 percent from the field. The Wildcats did commit one more turnover than the Warriors, but they shot just under 48 percent from the field and went 30-38 from the free throw line.
“I was dissapointed with the way we practiced this week and it showed in the game,” noted head coach Sharon Turner-Dean. This was especially dissapointing considering the Warriors were coming off their first win of the season against Western Oregon on Saturday.
Concerned with the lack of leadership Turner-Dean said, “We need somebody to step up and take charge as a leader, there are some that are capable they just need to do it. This road trip will show how mentally tough we are”.
The Warriors will practice tomorrow and then head down south tomorrow night where they will meet up with defending West Region Champion #4 UC San Diego on Friday night. The Warriors will return home December 4th to host Holy Names in a non-conference game, tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
