TURLOCK – The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team picked up their first home win of the season defeating Holy Names 72-57 in non-conference action at Warrior Arena.
Playing without the services of senior starters Gwen Page and Amanda Everett, (both out with injuries), freshmen Christin Gowan and Katie Busi both put up career best numbers.
Gowan scored 13 points, 10 of them coming in the first half as the Warriors begin to pull away from the Hawks. Busi picked up a double-double, matching her career best 15 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Aleta Stamps collected eight rebounds and Lysandra Williams scored a season high 15 points. Angelita Hutton scored 15 for the Hawks.
The score was tied at 19 with just over 10 minutes left in the first half, but then the Warriors slowly began to pull away going on a 20-10 run to close out the first period and make the score 39-29 at intermission. The Hawks were able to close the gap to eight points with 15:53 left, but that was as close as they would get. The Warriors built a 19 point lead with six minutes left and held on for a 15 point victory.
Head Coach Sharon Turner-Dean found out Tuesday morning that she would be without Page and Everett which bumped up the minutes for a few players, most notably Christin Gowan who played a season high 30 minutes.
Turner-Dean said of Gowan's play, “With Amanda out she had to take a lot more of the point duties which she handled well, she is a very smart basketball player who still has a lot to learn but we are very encouraged by the play of our freshman”.
The Warriors (2-5) will be back in action next Tuesday as they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on Air Force at 7:00 p.m. (MST). They do not return to Warrior Arena and CCAA play until after the New Year with games on January 4th and 5th against San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay.
