TURLOCK — The Warriors seemed to have the game under control Friday afternoon until a defensive meltdown with less than 12 minutes to play allowed Cal State L.A. to take the lead and win by a final score of 2-0.
Cal State L.A. broke the 0-0 tie in the 79th minute when the team's leading goal scorer Morten Marthinsen crossed a ball to teammate John Massaquoi in the goalie box. Massaquoi redirected the pass while it was still in the air, lofting it just over Warrior goalkeeper
Mando Herrera's reach for his 5th goal of the season.
Massaquoi would add a second goal 10 minutes later with less than three minutes to play. Massaquoi took a pass from Golden Eagle Forward Spencer Tripp at midfield and fired a shot from just inside the center circle. The ball went in just under the crossbar and gave Cal State L.A. a 2-0 lead that would stand.
Both teams created a number of scoring opportunities in the first half, but the scoreboard stayed blank going into halftime. Herrera picked up four saves in the half to hold the Golden Eagles scoreless.
The Warriors shot the ball at will towards the goal during the second half, but were not able to find the back of the net. Both teams finished with 19 shots apiece. Midfielder
Alfredo Renteria had five shots for the Warriors, while
Kyle Lindquist and
Matthew Johnson had three shots each.
The loss is the Warriors' 12th in 15 games all-time against Cal State L.A. The Warriors' record now stands at 2-7-3 overall and 1-5-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Stanislaus will take a break from CCAA action on Monday when Western Washington of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference visits for a non-conference game starting at 1 p.m.
