TURLOCK — The Warriors lost their third straight match in a row Friday afternoon as San Francisco State won in Turlock for the first time in four years by a score of 2-1.
The game was the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams. Cal State Stanislaus got on the board first just 11 minutes into the game when
Artemio Arteaga placed a free kick in the upper right corner of the net to beat Gators goalkeeper Israel Cisneros, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
The Gators responded three minutes later with a goal of their own. Gator forward and CCAA leading goal scorer Dylan Glass changed directions three times at the top of the goalie box before finding an opening and firing a shot for his fifth goal of the season. Midfielder Shawn Granger was credited with the assist.
San Francisco State went ahead for good in the 37th minute after the Warriors got called for a handball in the goalie box, giving the Gators a penalty kick. Midfielder Wes Whitt took the shot, beating Warrior 'keeper
Mando Herrera to the left side of the net.
The Warriors out-shot San Francisco State 17-9, including 10 shots on goal to the Gators' two, both of which ended up as goals.
“(It was) a disappointing effort today,” said Warrior head coach Eric Mild. “The entire game was played at the tempo and style that San Francisco State likes to play in, and unfortunately it does not suit our style or tempo.”
Cal State Stanislaus' next match will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday against Cal State Monterey Bay at Warrior Field. The Warriors are 3-0-1 against the Otters in their last four games against them dating back to 2005.
