TURLOCK — The Warriors women's basketball team had the top team in the conference on the ropes for 36 minutes, but the more experienced Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes pulled out a 76-71 overtime victory at Warrior Arena Friday night.
Vanessa Wilt recorded her 12th double-double of the year with 25 points and 20 rebounds as CSUSB improved to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Shristy Kumar had 23 points and seven rebounds while
Lysandra Williams scored 16 as Stanislaus snapped a two-game winning streak and dropped to 4-7 overall and 2-3 CCAA. It was Kumar's second straight 23-point game.
"It was there for the taking," CSUS head coach Sharon Turner-Dean said. "I am proud of the team. In December we would have rolled over once they started to comeback but we didn't tonight."
The Warriors had a hot first half and took a 16-point, 39-23 lead at the break after a
Katie Busi with :06 left. Stanislaus maintained that lead for most of the second half, but a 13-4 run during a four-minute stretch late in the second half cut the Warrior lead to one with 4:05 left to play.
Jaclyn Rainville then hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Coyotes a 59-56 lead with 3:25 left to play in regulation.
With CSUSB leading by three down the stretch, Warrior freshman
Christin Gowan hit a three-pointer with 27 seconds left to tie the score and ultimately sent the game into overtime. Gowan finished with 10 points. Busi pulled 14 rebounds for a career-high.
In the overtime period, CSUSB built a seven-point lead behind Wilt's play. The center scored four points but had five rebounds to help her team to their first 5-0 start in CCAA play.
"This was a huge growing process for our young team. Normally you see me get upset after a loss but tonight I am pleased with our efforts against the best team in the conference," Turner-Dean said.
The Warriors allowed the Coyotes to take outside jumpers by denying the entry pass to Wilt. Wilt finished the first half with 11 points and 8 rebounds but the Coyotes shot just 24.4 percent as a team and only 1 for 10 from behind the arc.
Meanwhile, Kumar was red hot in the first half making five of her six field goal attempts, including 3-for-3 from the three-point line, for 17 first half points.
