TURLOCK -- Playing with a lot of poise down the stretch — and turning in extra work — the Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team pulled out a 92-88 win over San Francisco State in double overtime Friday night at Warrior Arena.
Lysandra Williams scored a season-high 21 points and
Aleta Stamps netted a career-best 14 points, including an important three-point play at the end of the fist OT, to lead the Warriors.
Shristy Kumar scored 19 points and freshman guard Christin tied her best with 15 points and dished eight assists on a team-effort night.
Katie Busi also had 14 points with six rebounds as Cal State Stanislaus picked up its first CCAA win to improve to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in league play. San Francisco State is 4-6 and 1-2 in the CCAA.
"I am really proud of the fact that we didn't roll over after they came back on us. We dug in and came back and stayed in the game," head coach Sharon Turner-Dean said. "I was impressed with Lysandra's penetration and using of her left hand. We've been trying to get her to use her left but she would drive and use her right hand and get blocked."
After tailing by five late in the first overtime period, the Warriors got a couple of free throws from Gowan to pull within three at 80-77 with less than a minute left to play. The Warriors regain possession on a Stamps steal with 45 ticks left and she converted on a layup and and nailed the free throw on the three-point play to tie the score.
SFSU tried a three-pointer at the buzzer that sailed long to force a second overtime period.
In the second OT, Stamps came up big defensively with three steals during the five-minute period while the Warriors out-scored the Gators 12-8 for the final margin of victory.
"Aleta has been practicing really hard and that hard work is paying dividend," Turner-Dean said.
The win was the Warriors' third consecutive OT win dating back to last season.
Cal State Stanislaus led by as many as 10 points halfway through the second half after an
Amanda Everett free throw. The Gators rallied back and eventually tied the score at 69-69 on a Antwinette Turner jumper with :27 left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Tomorrow night, Cal State Monterey Bay visit the Warriors for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The CSUMB Otters were at Chico State Friday night.
