TURLOCK — In a match where they were able put everything together, the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors dominated the first place San Francisco State Gators Friday afternoon in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match.
Melissa Phillips cashed in on a penalty kick,
Tiffani Moore and
Marissa Dunaway both scored in a 3-0 win as the Warriors improve to 6-5-4 overall and 2-5-3 in conference play. San Francisco State, which entered the week atop of the CCAA north, dropped to 9-6-2 and 7-3-1.
"We really put together a complete game today. For 90 minutes we played good soccer," CSUS head coach Gabe Bolton said. "I was most impressed with the way we battled a very physical San Francisco State team. We knew coming into the game that they are very direct and extremely physical. We raised our level of physicality."
The Warriors played with high intensity early and throughout the match and got on the board first in the 31st minute. SFSU was called on a hand-ball foul in the box. Phillips converted on a penalty kick to give Stanislaus a 1-0 lead. It was Phillips' second PK goal and third score of the season.
Moore, who entered the match just seconds earlier, gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead at 35:48.
Gennaka Fox sent a cross from the near corner in front of the net that was knocked in by Moore — her third score of the season.
Rachel Mathews then connected with Dunaway on a two-on-one chance that was finished nicely by Dunaway. Dunaway leads the team with seven goals and joins two other former freshmen standouts — Erin Taylor and Marti Teunissen — with seven goals during their first collegiate season.
"It was a breakout game for the offense today. We really started to create great chances after about the first 10 minutes," Bolton said. "Even the penalty kick that got the scoring started was a result of good running off the ball and excellent passing."
The Warrior defense turned back the Gator attack and only allowed two SF State shots on goal as the team picked up its fifth shutout of the season.
"Our back line did a great job of reading the game and anticipating what San Francisco was going to do," Bolton said. "(Assistant Coach) Marti (Teunissen) put together a terrific scouting video yesterday with clips of their offensive tendencies and it really helped our team see what was coming and how to counter."
The Warriors will celebrate senior day and recognize the out-going seniors on Sunday when they host Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m. at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex.
