Second half run keys Warrior victory

TURLOCK -- A big run in the second half helped put the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team in the lead for good over William Jessup University Thursday, as the Warriors won big, 95-79, on Homecoming night.

Junior Matt Ibewiro notched his second straight double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Warriors. Ibewiro also scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds on Tuesday at Academy of Art in San Francisco. Also in double-digit scoring for the Warriors was Michael Dyson with 14 points, Casey Cutts with 11 off the bench and Brandon Curtis with 10 points in 13 minutes played.

The win moves the Warriors' record to 2-0. William Jessup falls to 0-5. The Warriors will now rest over the weekend and get ready for the County Bank Classic over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 28 and 29.

With 10 minutes to play, William Jessup was still hanging close, trailing by just four at 62-58. Then the Warriors kicked it up a notch by going on a 12-0 run, keyed by four points, two rebounds and an assist from Michael Dyson during the four-minute stretch. That made the score 74-58, a deficit William Jessup would not be able to overcome.

William Jessup only led three times in the game, the last occassion at 11-10 with 15:02 to play in the first half. The team was led by Zack Sowers, who posted a whopping 32 points in the game with six 3-pointers. Sowers hit three of his treys in the final 2:50 of the game.

William Jessup outshot Cal State Stanislaus, 50.9 percent to 48.7 percent. The Warriors outrebounded an opponent for the first time this season including exhibition games, as they pulled down 39 boards, 16 on the offensive end, to William Jessup's 29.

The first game of the County Bank Classic tips off at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 when California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Cal State Monterey Bay takes on Dominican University. The Warriors are scheduled to go at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 28 against the Keelhaulers of Cal Maritime.
