Warriors pull out win over Grand Canyon

12/13/2008 3:21:52 PM

TURLOCK -- Katie Busi had a tough game -- until when it counted the most as she made the big plays in the game's final two minutes to help the Warriors rally to beat Grand Canyon, 68-66, Saturday afternoon at Warrior Arena.

Busi had two key rebounds, two blocked-shots, and two buckets -- including the game winner -- as the Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team improved to 6-1 on the season. Grand Canyon falls to 3-4.

Gwen Page led the Warriors with 20 points and seven rebounds. Busi finished with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and four blocks and Lysandra Williams had 12 points.

The comeback win is the Warriors' fifth this season.

"I prefer it not to be this way, but I will take the win," head coach Sharon Turner-Dean said. "They are finding ways to win."

Trailing for most of the game, the Warriors took their first lead halfway through the second half on a long three-pointer by Christin Gowan. A tough game followed and another Gowan three-pointer gave the Warriors another lead, at 57-56.

Grand Canyon would regain control and led by four, 66-62, at 2:52 on a pair of free throws by Marnee Overton. That's when Page and Busi took over.

Page's layup cut the GCU led by half and Busi took a defensive rebound to give Stanislaus the momentum. Busi's layup at 1:16 would tie the score and it was her short jumper in the post with 11 ticks left gave Stanislaus the final lead.

The final scoring play was set up nicely after Busi grabbed an offensive rebound off a Samantha Bertomen miss free-throw. Christin Gowan got the ball on the baseline and dished to Busi for the winner.

The Antelopes still had a chance for a tie by Busi blocked a shot by Stacy Haddow to seal the win.

"We worked on situations every day and I do think it's paying off," Turner-Dean said. "But we still need to work harder and play better defensively."

Haddow and Dana Iverson each had 14 points to lead Grand Canyon.

Stanislaus will be off until a pair of games at No. 4 Alaska Anchorage next Friday and Saturday.
