Pottorff leads Warriors over UHH in OT

9/5/2008 6:30:48 PM

TURLOCK – Freshman Kayln Pottorff banged home the game-winning goal as the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team pulled out a thrilling, 2-1 overtime victory over visiting Hawaii-Hilo, Friday at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex.

With the win, the Warriors move to 2-0-1 heading into Sunday's match against Menlo College while the Vulcans drop to 1-3-0. Sunday's match at home is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m.

The first half of action was fairly even with both teams finding the back of the net.  The Warriors got on the board first just over eight minutes into action.  Adrienne Sorenson collected the ball off a rebound and found Jade Adamson who belted a shot from the middle of the box past the Vulcan keeper.

The Vulcans rallied back about five minutes later when Melissa Grant lased a free kick just over the outstretched arms of Warrior goalkeeper Jessica Sitarz.

Although the game remained tied at one until the eventual game winner, the second half was clearly dominated by the Warriors.  In the second half and overtime period, the Warriors out shot the Vulcans 24-7 and tallied nine corner kicks while surrendering just one.

“I thought we came out flat and even with the early goal our energy level wasn't there,” stated head coach Gabe Bolton, “but in the second half and overtime we picked it up and began to dominate”.  “Once we started connecting passes and controlling possessions, we were able to dominate, but you have to give Hawaii Hilo credit for continuing to fight and take it to overtime,” added Bolton.

The game-winning goal came at the 96:24 mark in the game.  The ball was cleared from around midfield to Sorenson who made a nice touch pass through a couple defenders to Pottorff who banged it by the goalkeeper to finish the game.  It was Pottorff's first career goal in just her second collegiate game.

“Adrienne passed me the ball, I touched it once to the outside, hit it hard and was able to get it past the goalie,” said Pottorff.  “The adjustment to college has been difficult at times, but my teammates have made the adjustment a lot easier.  They let me know how to do things and where to be on the field at certain times.  I am now very comfortable and look forward to the rest of the season.”

Current Brine CCAA player of the week Sorenson continued to contribute to the Warrior offense, collecting two assists.  She now has seven points in just three games this season.
