TURLOCK — For the second time in 11 days, the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team scored nine goals — this time it was against Menlo College as the Warriors defeated the Oaks, 9-0, in a non-conference match on Sunday.
Maryanne Sayles scored three goals and assisted on another to lead the way for the Stanislaus (3-0-1) offense.
Marissa Dunaway scored twice and
Gennaka Fox — who got the scoring rout started — also netted a score plus two assists. Six of the nine goals were scored by non-starters.
With her three-goal, one-assist performance, Sayles set a new Warrior single-match record with seven points.
"It was great to see Maryanne bounce back from Friday and have a big game," CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "Maryanne always plays with a lot of heart. Today she really controlled her emotions and showed class in front of goal."
Fox was the first to score as she got a pass from
Jenna Kasch in the ninth minute to give CSUS a 1-0 lead. Fox became the ninth different goal scorer this season for the Warriors. Dunaway then came off the bench and immediately score just inside the 30th minute mark and added a second goal just two-and-a-half minutes later to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
"Gennaka had her best game of the year. Her defensive effort was outstanding. Offensively her passing was terrific and the goal she scored really sparked the offense," Bolton said.
Sayles' first two goals came just 48 seconds apart of each other — at 42:30 and 43:18 — to send the match into intermission 5-0. Her second-goal was one for the highlight reel as she found a loose ball and knocked it in from 25 yards out, over the Menlo (2-1) goalkeeper Samantha Hoffart.
The other three goals were scored by
Jade Adamson,
Adrienne Sorenson and
Kayln Pottorff in the second half. Sorenson's score came on a penalty kick at 79:33. Pottorff,
Lisa Garcia and
Julia Geller also figured in the scoring each with an assist.
"We talked a lot about team defending this week and our improvement really showed. I was proud of how hard we concentrated the entire game," said Bolton.
Goalkeepers
Jessica Sitarz and
Krista Messer each played 45 minutes for the shared shutout.
Stanislaus opened the regular season on Aug. 28 with a 9-0 win over Northwest Nazarene to set a new school record with goals and assists in a match. In four matches, the Warriors have now outscored opponents 20-3.
The Warriors will play Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont on Tuesday before opening CCAA play next Sunday against Sonoma State in Turlock.
