SAN BERNARDINO — The Warriors had two good-looks at the basket in the final seconds of overtime to tie the score, but
Katie Busi's three-point attempt came up short as Cal State San Bernardino edged Cal State Stanislaus, 46-43, in a low scoring affair at Coussoulis Arena.
The Warriors had held San Bernardino scoreless in the final four minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime before coming up short on the road. Cal State Stanislaus dropped its third straight and falls to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cal State San Bernardino stayed atop of the conference standings, with two other teams, at 3-0 and 5-4 overall. UC San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona also won Friday night as all three teams are off to a 3-0 start. CSUSB has now defeated the Warriors in nine consecutive meetings, but Friday's game was much closer than last year's 74-60 score in San Bernardino.
Cal State Stanislaus nailed all six of its free throw attempts in the final minutes of regular period with Busi hitting two freebies at 1:21 left to tie the score at 41-41. That would be the same score until Aubrey Duran made two free throws to give CSUSB a 43-41 lead with 2:03 left to play in overtime.
Busi finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
Jeanette Rowe had eight and
Lysandra Williams netted six points.
Gwendolyn Page was just 1-for-12 from the field for 3 points but pulled 14 rebounds.
The Warriors had held a 35-34 lead at 7:15 in the second half, but the Coyotes went on a 7-0 run before they went ice cold in their home gym. Tougher defense by the Warriors contributed greatly as CSUS held San Bernardino to just 22.1 percent from the floor.
However, the Warriors didn't shoot well either and were held to a season-low 43 points. The Warriors were averaging 67.3 points -- fourth in the CCAA -- a game entering the weekend. The Warriors made just 11 of 53 attempts for 20.8 percent in the game, including an ice-cold 18.5 percent in the first half.
The Warriors will take on Cal Poly Pomona Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. in Pomona, where CSUS head coach Sharon Turner-Dean once help coached the Broncos to two national championships. The Warriors hope to snap a 10-game losing streak to Cal Poly Pomona (7-5, 3-0 CCAA), which beat Chico State 65-61 Friday night.
