SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State Stanislaus women's tennis, a first-year program that is already making its presence felt in the CCAA conference and NCAA Division II, served up an 8-1 victory Friday over host Cal State San Bernardino.
The Warriors, ranked No. 32 in the nation in NCAA Division II and No. 4 in the West Region, improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA, retaining their hold on second place in the standings behind perennial champion UC San Diego.
The Coyotes dropped to 0-8 in the CCAA and 1-10 overall with two regular season matches remaining next Thursday at home against Cal Poly Pomona and on April 11 against Sonoma State.
Three-time CCAA player of the week
Verena Preikschas remained unbeaten in CCAA play at 6-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 straight set victory over CSUSB No. 1 Leslie Horn. Preikschas, a freshman from Arnsberg, Germany, and her doubles partner,
Katie Eng, defeated Horn and Brittany Choate, 8-1 in doubles to remain unbeaten at 9-0 this season.
The only victory for the Coyotes came at No. 3 doubles where the freshman duo of Allison Brooks and Janay Palicte defeated
Lexy Harrington and
Heather Cotter, 8-5. Brooks and Palicte are now 6-4 this season and 5-3 in the CCAA.
CSUSB's Kara Jenkins went into a tiebreaker at No. 5 singles against
Brianna McClintock and played a tough match but McClintock pulled out the match 2-6, 7-5, 10-7.
Choate gave Eng a battle at No. 2 singles before succumbing, 6-3, 6-4.
