TURLOCK — The positives of Cal State Stanislaus' 3-2 loss at No. 11 Sonoma State Friday afternoon greatly outweigh the negatives for new head coach
Dana Taylor's young team.
The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead and had the game tied at halftime 2-2, but could not rebound after giving up a second half goal as they fell, 3-2, to the nationally-ranked Seawolves at Seawolf Soccer Field in Rohnert Park.
"I was proud of the way the boys battled today," Taylor said. "We showed our youthfulness at moments in the game today when we had mental lapses that lead to our demise."
The loss is the first of the season for the Warriors, as they move to 3-1-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Sonoma State stays unbeated this year with a 4-0-1 overall mark and a 1-0-0 record in CCAA games.
Victor Regalado got the scoring going for the Warriors in the ninth minute when he gathered a rebound off a blocked shot and fired it in for his fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for Cal State Stanislaus.
Sonoma State would tie the game in the 21st when Trevor Hurst scored off a corner kick from Cam Vickers. Just under three minutes later, the Seawolves gained their first lead of the game when freshman Jomed Tejan gathered a ball that, off a kick by Hurst, bounced behind Cal State Stanislaus 'keeper
Javier Rosales. He quickly slotted it home to put Sonoma State up, 2-1.
With only 1 minute, 18 seconds, to go before halftime, Jose Velasquez tied the game at 2-2 with his second goal of the season
off an assist by Bladimir Murillo.
Sonoma State would have the final say, however, as they put in the winning goal six minutes into the second half when Erick Delgado netted his first collegiate goal. After Stuart Gallant took a free kick, Ben Langwith was able to head the ball across the mouth of the goal to the far post, where Delgado booted it in.
"A lot of questions were answered for me today as a coach, watching our boys play," Taylor said. "I think we have a lot to build off of. Now it's just a matter of getting the boys ready for Sunday."
The Warriors took just five shots in the second half, but all five of them were on goal, compared to the Seawolves' 12 shots in the half with only one of them on goal.
The Warriors will continue their CCAA-opening road trip at 11:30 a.m. Sunday in Arcata when they take on Humboldt State.
