TURLOCK — Playing without
Katie Busi for almost the entire second half, the short-handed Cal State Stanislaus Warriors played inspired and pulled together for a come-from-behind 53-48 victory over San Francisco State Friday night.
Alishea Kelly led the Warriors with 15 points and
Christin Gowan had 10 as the Warriors improved to 5-11 overall and 4-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Despite 23 points and 15 rebounds from Donisha Tate, the San Francisco State Gators dropped to 8-12 overall and 4-8 in the CCAA. It was Tate's eighth double-double of the season.
Busi hit the floor hard after battling for a rebound in front of her own bench four minutes into the second half and had to be carried off the court. She suffered a right-knee hyper-extension and is currently a "probable" for Saturday's game against Cal State Monterey Bay, according to Athletic Trainer
Gary Hogan.
Trying to find offense from another source took the Warriors a little while, but they eventually managed to rally back. Stanislaus trailed by as many as 10 points at 6:32 to go on a Tate free throw to make it 44-34.
The Warriors started the rally on defense, forcing SF State to miss shots and forced turnovers.
Jasmine Carter's layup at 5:04 sparked the CSUS rally as the Warriors rolled off seven unanswered points that was capped by a Kelly three-ppointer to make it 44-41 in favor of SFSU.
After Tate make a free throw, Gowan converted on a three-point play to pull within one and
Ebony Mims-Johnson's pair of free throws completed the comeback that gave Stanislaus a 46-45 lead with 2:36 to go.
Kelly would make another three-point seconds later, then Stanislaus converted on all four free throws in the final seconds to hold on for the win.
As a team, the Warriors missed just one free throw on the night, going 13 of 14 from the foul line. Also making a difference was their defensive play, especially late in the second half, as CSUS tallied 13 steals.
Tate was 8 for 13 from the field and made seven free throws to lead the Gators. She scored 14 of her points in the first half while the Gators led 23-20 at the break. Dominique Hunter added 11 points for SF State but the rest of the team had 14 points total.
The Warrirors will take on Cal State Monterey Bay (11-5, 7-5 CCAA) Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. CSUMB lost at Chico State, 71-44, Friday.
