TURLOCK —
Prince Abidoye gave the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team a spark in the second half, but the Warriors weren't able to overcome UC San Diego as the visiting Tritons held on to win, 56-48, Friday night.
Abidoye nailed two timely three-pointers to keep Stanislaus in the game and finished with 11 points while
Dwight Jones led the Warriors with 15 points, four assists and four steals. CSUS, however, dropped to 9-13 overall and 5-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
With five conference games left to play, the Warriors are two games out of eighth place, where they have to be to qualify for the postseason tournament.
Jordan Lawley did just about everything for UC San Diego as he finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds and played every second in the game. He was a prolific 7 of 12 from the field and made 8 of 12 free throws to lead the Tritons (6-13, 5-11 CCAA).
Lawley, who is having a career year, netted his 13th 20-plus point game this season and is averaging 27.3 points per game in the last four contests.
The Warriors had brief one-point leads in the first half and found themselves down as many as 10-points five minutes into the second half.
Jones gave the Warriors some light by nailing a layup, stealing an inbounds pass and scoring another bucket to pull CSUS within six at 29-23 at the 15:14 mark.
UCSD would build the lead back up to 10 with seven minutes to go, then the Warriors used a 10-2 run to come within two at 45-43 with 4:32 to play. The 10-2 run featured two layups by Abidoye and a free throw after a three-point play.
Bryce Alvari then made a couple of layups and Lawley finished off the Warriors with more free throws to help UCSD hold on. Alvari finished with eight points in 12 minutes of play.
Matt Ibewiro came off the bench and scored seven points with five rebounds for the Warriors. Stanislaus shot just 29.8 percent -- 25.8 in the first half -- from the floor and was just 3 of 20 from the three-point arch.
Stanislaus hopes to regroup when Cal State East Bay visits on Saturday. Tipoff is at about 7:30 p.m.
