Jones, Johnson lead Warriors over Pioneers

TURLOCK — Dwight Jones scored 19 points and Chad Johnson turned in 17 as the duo led the Warriors over Cal State East Bay in a closely contested men's basketball game Saturday night at Warrior Arena.

The win moved Cal State Stanislaus up the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings as the Warriors are now just one game out of eighth place for a berth into the conference tournament. The Warriors, now 10-13 overall and 6-12 in the CCAA, are a game back of Sonoma State (7-11 in CCAA) with four games left to go.

Jawaan Rubin had 16 points to lead Cal State East Bay (5-17, 2-15 in CCAA) while Donavon Jackson chipped in 13.

Neither team led by more than five points -- the Warriors did that twice -- in the first half which nine ties including the intermission score of 35-35. In fact, Neither team led by more than five points in the entire game until the final seconds of the contest.

CSUEB had a five-point lead six minutes into the second half (44-39) after a Mark Samuel layup. The Warriors led by five three times in the second half with their final 5-point advantage with 34 ticks left on a Johnson free throw.

Two free throws by Mactar Gueye with 24 seconds left sealed the deal for Cal State Stanislaus and the final margin of victory.

There were 12 ties in the game, the last coming at 12:06 left in the second half.

Jones who had 10 of his 19 points in the second half nailed a key three-pointer with 51 seconds left to give CSUS a 64-59 lead.

A few minutes earlier, at 4:05, after CSUEB cut the lead to two on a Jacob Noisat layup, Johnson did the same with his own trey to make it 59-54. Johnson also scored 10 of his points in the second half.

Cal State Stanislaus finishes off its home schedule next weekend when Humboldt State and Sonoma State visit Warrior Arena. Friday's contest against HSU is at 7:30 p.m.
