POMONA -- The No. 6 singles players usually don't get much attention in collegiate tennis — unless they were the deciding factor in a closely contested team dual.
Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona,
Erin McGurty was the unsung hero as she rallied to win at No. 6 singles to help the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors edge a strong Cal Poly Pomona squad, 5-4.
Despite top player
Verena Preikschas losing her match on the day, the Warriors were able to count on the new players to come through.
Both McGurty and
Arina Polovnikova at No. 4 won their singles matches to help the No. 17 Warriors pick up their first CCAA win of the year. Cal State Stanislaus is now 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cal Poly Pomona's Jessica Winkler took the first set 6-4, but McGurty got stronger and rallied to win 6-1 and 6-2 as the decisive team point, according to CSUS head coach
Verek Visaraga.
"(Verena's) opponent played a better match today," Visaraga said of sophomore Preikschas's first conference defeat in singles play. "But even (Verena) said it herself, it takes pressure off her to not have to win every match and that her teammates can step up."
After a grueling long doubles match, Preikschas took the first set of her singles match 6-4 before dropping to Christie Lau 6-4, 6-3.
Vanesa Reibstein won at No. 2 singles easily, 6-2, 6-0, over Jackie Trendt.
Katie Eng also rallied to win at No. 3. Eng dropped the first set in tiebreakers to Jennifer Chow before dominating her opponent, 6-0, 6-3 to close out.
The No. 1 doubles team of Preikschas and Eng also rallied to won their match earlier on the day, beating Chow and Trendt, 9-7.
