CHICO – Alisha Kelly had 25 points but the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors women's basketball team lost to Chico State, 68-54 Tuesday night California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at Acker Gym.
Synchro Bull had another big offensive night, Kristin Marquardt registered the best all-around game of her short Chico State career, and the Wildcats used an 18-0 first half run to take early command of the contest and never trailed thereafter.
The win – Chico State's second straight and fifth in the last six games – improved the Wildcats' season record to 13-8, and with a 10-6 conference mark pulled to within a half game of fourth place Cal State Monterey Bay in the CCAA standings.
Cal State Stanislaus dropped its fourth straight game to fall to 5-15 overall and 4-12 in conference play.
Kelly single-handedly kept the Warriors in the game, scoring 18 of the team's 25 points in the opening period, going 6-for-12 from the field and draining four 3-pointers.
Chico State, anxious to avenge a 15-point loss to Stanislaus three weeks ago in Turlock, and had a 36-25 advantage at halftime on Tuesday.
A Kelly 3-pointer and a
Katie Busi layup to open the second half brought Stanislaus to within six of the Wildcats, but Chico State responded with a 17-9 run – Katie Girten highlighting the run with a long 3-point bucket to put the Wildcats up 53-39.
The Warriors hung around, though, eventually whittling the Wildcats' lead to seven with 6:18 to go – but again Chico State answered the threat, using layups by Bull, Richardson and Annelise Miller, and a Taylor Lydon 3-pointer to key a 9-2 run to put the 'Cats up 64-50 with three minutes to play. Stanislaus could get no closer than 10 the rest of the way, and Chico State cruised to the 68-54 victory.
Bull led the Wildcats with 18 points – her fourth straight double-digit scoring performance – with Marquardt adding a career-high 13 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocked shots. Chico State shot just under 45 percent on the night and outrebounded Stanislaus 38-36. Kelly led all scorers with 25 points in the losing effort.
The Warriors will open a four-game homestand on Friday when they host UC San Diego on SAAC's Make-A-Wish night at Warrior Arena.
