Alexia Poon gave Cal State Stanislaus an early goal, then freshman sensation
Karenee Demery scored another game-winning goal, as the Warriors defeated Cal Poly Pomona Sunday afternoon at Warrior Stadium.
The Warriors rebounded from Friday's tough loss to Cal State San Bernardino to hand the CPP Broncos their first defeat of the season with the 2-1 CSUS victory. With the win, the Warriors improve to 5-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Stanislaus is in first place in the CCAA North after two weeks.
Cal Poly Pomona, which had started the season with five straight shutouts, falls to 5-1-1 and 2-1-1 in the CCAA. The Broncos had tied their school record with five consecutive shutouts on Friday with a 1-0 OT win at Chico State.
"Cal Poly (Pomona) is a well organized team defensively. We did a graet job creating opportunities today," CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "I was very pleased that coming off of Friday's emotional match we were able to grind out a win."
The Warriors took advantage early on a spectular give-and-go play by Poon and Demery. Poon gave the ball wide to Demery on the far side of the box and Demery crossed it back between defenders to allow Poon to score.
"Alexia was extremely dangerous today coming out of the midfield. She was our playmaker today," Bolton said.
After Pomona scored 16 seconds into the second half on a Valerie Strawn goal, the Warriors responded with stronger defense and counter attack.
In the 68th minute, Demery received a short pass from
Tiffany Martin near the penalty kick line and turned to score her CCAA leading ninth goal of the season.
With nine goals and 20 points this season, Demery is already third in both categories in the CSUS record book. She has scored all five of the Warriors' game-winning goals in 2010.
Stanislaus goalkeeper
Millie Brown recorded five saves in picking up the win.
Sonoma State and Humboldt State are the Warriors' guests next weekend as the stretch of six straight home matches continues for Stanislaus.
