TURLOCK -- For the second straight time, the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team took down a ranked Sonoma State team. This time it was a 2-1 Warriors victory Friday night at Warrior Stadium.
Andres Zamora and
Jio Santana scored goals as the Warriors improved to 4-1-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assocation. The 23rd ranked Sonoma State falls to 5-2 and 3-2 in the CCAA.
The Warriors beat Sonoma State last year in their home finales with a 1-0 win on Oct. 25. Sonoma State was ranked No. 8 at the time.
"Great win for the team tonight, proud of the way they came back after a tough OT loss to Pomona," CSUS head coach
Dana Taylor said. "Once again, the guys did a great job sticking to the game plan that we worked out during the week."
Cam Vickers gave Sonoma State a lead in the 22nd minute, but the Warriors responded quickly with a goal at 38:46. A
Nolan Holdridge long throw in from the near sideline glanced off a defender with Zamora capping off the play with his third goal of the season. Zamora has now scored in back-to-back contests.
The typical physical contest between these conference divisional rivals resulted in nine yellow cards and they came early and often. By the time the clock hit inside the fifth minute mark, two cautions were issued to Stanislaus.
Sonoma State then picked up the next three yellows within a nine minute window.
"It was a very physical game and I am proud of our guys didn't lose their heads and stayed cool and manged the game," Taylor added. "They didn't panic and stuck with the plan and worked hard to finish the game."
With the tight match knotted at 1-1, the Warriors punched through again in the 86th minute. After a
Victor Regalado shot that hit the post,
Jio Santana collected the loose ball and sent in the game-winner. Both Warrior shots came after a
Brady Marshall shot from the near-side that was saved by SSU keeper Juan Sosa.
Stanislaus goalkeeper
Javier Rosales once again played well with a number of nice saves before finising with six credited to his totals.
For the Warriors, this time they only need 10 shots in the contest to score twice. This is after a stretch of three matches when they shot 76 times and resulted in three goals.
Humboldt State is the Warriors' next opponent when the Lumberjacks visit Warrior Stadium on Sunday. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. HSU (1-4-2, 1-3-1 CCAA) lost 1-0 at Chico State Friday.
