TURLOCK — Five different Warriors scored and the home side dominated in a physical contest as Cal State Stanislaus put up a five spot to beat Bethany University, 5-0, Monday night.
Brady Marshall scored his second goal of the year in the first half to give Stanislaus a 1-0 first half lead. Then goals by
Manny Avila,
Jio Santana,
Arturo Pulido and
Miguel Rodriguez in the second half helped the Warriors finish the non-conference schedule with a 1-0-1 record.
In two matches, the Warriors have now scored nine goals -- with eight different players doing the deed.
"It's always great to see guys put the ball in the back of the net," CSUS head coach
Dana Taylor said "I told them the scoring wasn't a concern, but we had to strengthen the defense and correct the problems."
The Warriors gave up four goals to Western Washington in the season opener Saturday night before rallying to comeback for a 4-4 tie.
"I thought we did a good job correcting a few things from what we saw on film," Taylor added. "The guys did a good job of solving those problems."
Monday night was a different story as the Warriors were in control from the start. Marshall got the scoring started in the 28th minute after collecting a rebound from a
Nolan Holdridge mid-field attempt.
The Warriors took 17 shots (to Bethany's six) in the first half, which was the same margin of foul calls against Stanislaus. The physical contest also included six yellow cards and a total of 43 fouls called by night's end.
"(That was the) problem tonight because so many guys had yellow cards it was difficult, for both teams, to get into the game," Taylor said.
Stanislaus wasted little time in the second half and took a 2-0 lead 26 seconds in on a goal by Avila. Exactly four minutes later, after a
Luis Guzman shot was blocked by a Bruin, Santana followed it in for a 3-0 Warrior lead.
The scoring didn't end there with the Warriors sending in non-starters into the match. Pulido scored in the 75th minute from 30 yards out and Rodriguez capped the scoring on a beautiful play that covered almost the entire length of the field. Sweeper
Trevor Grimbleby started the connect-the-dots play from the back on a long pass to Pulido, who dribbled around a defender and fed Rodriguez for the finish.
"It was nice to get a lot of players in the game and got them the playing time and experience," added Taylor. "We work on getting better with each game and we now get ready to start conference play with two tough road matches."
In the end, the Warriors out-shot Bethany, 30-10.
Stanislaus goalkeeper
Javier Rosales played a solid contest and had three saves. Bruins goalie Geovanni Serrato had seven saves.
Cal State Stanislaus opens Calfiornia Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday when it visits San Francisco State. Cal State Monterey Bay is the opponent on Sunday in Seaside.
