@ San Francisco State GATORS (0-5, 0-1 CCAA)

About the Gators: San Francisco State started the season 0-5 but has played a strong schedule with losses to Western Washington and Seattle Pacific (both received votes in the top 25 poll). SF State also lost at #16 Cal Poly Pomona, #13 Grand Canyon and Missouri S&T … Nicole Hicks leads the Gators with 8.6 points per game … SFSU averages just 41 points per game.
Testing Strength Away From Home
Traditionally, Stanislaus teams have not fared well on the road during the CCAA season and the 2011-12 squad will have a chance to reverse that trend early this season. During the month of December, the Warriors will play six games away from home including two neutral site games (in San Francisco) sandwiched by two CCAA weekends … Since joining the CCAA in 1998, the Warriors are 34-81 in conference road games (38-96 overall).
Last Week
Cal State Stanislaus went 2-0 with a pair of impressive non-conference victories. The Warriors routed William Jessup, 73-45, on Tuesday. Two days after Thanksgiving, the Warriors defeated Dominican, 67-57, on Saturday.
Seeing Double (-Double)
Fans may be seeing double when they look at the court with both twin sisters Lauren and
Erin Godde on the floor. But for Lauren, there are also statistical double-doubles. Lauren has turned in back-to-back games with double digits in scoring and rebounding. She scored a career-high 22 points with 13 rebounds on Tuesday for her first career double-double. Lauren followed that up with a 13-point, 14-rebound game on Saturday … For the week, Lauren averaged 17.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game.
Speaking of Sophomore Twins
Lauren and
Erin Godde are not the only set of twins on the Warrior squad. Cal State Stanislaus sports another pair of twins in Amber and
Jasmine Scott. The Scotts, from Los Angeles, are both sophomore transfers from College of Eastern Utah.
Henderson Slashes Her Way to Buckets
If the first three games are any indictation, Warrior Nation will see big numbers next to No. 21 on the scoreboard a lot this season.
Theresa Henderson has averaged 17.7 points (and 10.7 rebounds) in three games so far. She's coming off a career-high game with 21 points on Saturday after posting two double-doubles in two previous contests (15 points, 10 rebounds & 17 points, 15 rebounds).
Dishing Tirado
Rosa Tirado has emerged as the team's point guard as the senior is averaging 3.3 assists per game. Her coming out party as the assist leader was on Tuesday when she handed out seven assists against William Jessup.
Don't Say We are Short!
Take a look at the team roster and you will see no one listed above 6-foot-1, but that has not mattered for the Warriors when it comes to rebounding. Despite matching up against much taller opponents, Stanislaus outrebounded its opponents this past week (88 to 60 was the total count). Led by
Lauren Godde, who is averaging 11.3 boards per game, the Warriors have a plus-5 rebounding margin even after being out-rebounded in the opener against Chico State, 40-27.
Getting to the Line
The Warriors have been to the free throw line with 77 attempts in three games (an average of nearly 26 tries per game). The Warriors have converted on 51 free throws (66.2 percent).
Solid Collegiate Debut
A new Warrior making a splash early in her career is
Briana Cotton (FR, G, San Jose). Coming off the bench, Cotton has turned in two double-digit scoring games (11 and 10 points).
Head Coach Sharon Turner
Sharon Turner enters her 10th season as the Warriors' head coach with a career record of 88-154. In her first season, in 2004-05, she led the Warriors to an NCAA Tournament apperance. In 2008-09, the Warriors qualified for the CCAA Championship tournament for the first time. She has taken the Warriors to the CCAA Championship tournament two out of the last three years (missing the turnament in 2010 due to tiebreakers). Last year was her most successful conference season since 2002-03 as the Warriors posted an 11-11 CCAA mark.
Fitzpatrick Arena
Warrior Arena was renamed Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena at the start the 2010-11 season. The arena is named for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks have been long-time supporters of CSU Stanislaus. The gym has been named Warrior Arena since 1999, 21 years after it was built.
CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll
After making the tournament for the second time in the three years, the Warriors start the 2011-12 campaign low on the coaches radar. In a vote of the conference's head coaches, the Warriors were predicted to finish 11th in 2011-12.
CCAA Basketball Championships
The 2012 CCAA Men's & Women's Basketball Championship tournament will be held at the beginning of March. Eight teams qualify for the event with first round games on campus site Feb. 28. The four winners will advance to the semifinals and finals, March 2-3, in La Jolla on the campus of UC San Diego. The winner of the tournament would receive the automatic bid for the NCAA tournament.
