Box Score TURLOCK —
Reggie Jones picked up another double-double and the Warriors used a strong second half to pull away from Dominican in a 82-68 non-conference victory Thursday night.
Jones scored 24 points (his fourth 20-point game this season) with 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the year as Cal State Stanislaus continues its successful start by improving to 7-2.
Donald Gaines provided a great spark off the bench with a career-high 13 points (11 of them came in the second half) and
Ronnie Sawyer chipped in 12 points.
Dan Daviess had 10.
But once again it was Jones who led the way. The senior scored 17 of his points in the first half in a surprisingly close game. Dominican (1-10 overall) took advantage of some early CSUS turnovers to stay close in the opening half. They kept pace with the Warriors for a 37-33 halftime score.
The second half, however, was all Cal State Stanislaus, especially during a five-minute stretch. The Warriors went on a 14-0 run to turn a 49-42 game into a 21-point, 63-42, advantage after
Sam Marcus nailed a trey with 10:41 left.
The Warriors would add to that lead and led by as many as 25 at the 8-minute mark following another Marcus triple and a Sawyer layup.
Gaines was a big part of that spurt. Immediately entering the game four minutes into the second half, Gaines made a layup, picked off a Penguin pass and finished with a dunk. He capped off his little spark with a layup and a pair of free throws to score eight straight points during a 62-second window.
Cal State Stanislaus scored 80 or more points for the fourth time and held its opponent in the 60s for the sixth time this season. As a group, the Warriors shot 55.6 percent on the night, including a sparkling 60 percent in the second half.
Xander McNally led Dominican with 15 points.
The Warriors will turn the calendar and prepare for three CCAA contests in a week starting with a road game at Chico State on Monday. Stanislaus hosts UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino at Fitzpatrick Arena next weekend.
