SAN RAFAFEL — Against their first non-Division I opponent of the season, the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors took down the Dominican Penguins, 7-2, in women's tennis Sunday.
Top players
Verena Preikschas and
Vanesa Reibstein had little trouble leading their team to the victory as they won their doubles matches before shutting down their singles competition.
Preikschas teammed up with freshman
McKenzy Harden in the No. 1 doubles match and they handled Irina Morozova and Shannon McCarthy-Contreras, 8-1. Preikchas later took on Morozova at the top singles match and the junior from Germany blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 doubles, Reibstein partnered with fellow senior
Erin McGurty and the duo took cared of Jamie Fernandez and Tami Tan, 8-2. Reibstein then beat McCarthy-Contreras in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.
Harden, at No. 4, and McGurty, at No. 5, also won their individual matches in straight sets while
Lexy Harrington won at No. 3 singles over Michele Freitas, 4-6, 6-2, and 10-5 in the super tiebreak set.
Sunday also marked the debut of freshman
Aubree Brenda, who made the trip in place of junior
Katie Eng, who had prior commitments.
Cal State Stanislaus improved to 1-2 on the season after opening the spring season with road matches at Division I Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. The Warriors will host the same Dominican Penguins next Sunday in Turlock.
