LAS VEGAS — Cal State Stanislaus' top doubles team of
Verena Preikschas and
Katie Eng pulled off the biggest win as a duo on Tuesday as they were victorious against a Armstrong Atlantic State team.
Preikschas and Eng took on top ranked and three-time defending champion AASU's Alida Muller-Wehlau and Aleksandra Filipovski. The Warriors duo took a narrow 9-8 victory for Stanislaus' lone victory.
No. 7 Hawaii Pacific had ended AASU's string of five straight 9-0 wins earlier on Tuesday with a 5-4 loss. The Warriors extended that with the 8-1 match.
Although it isn't their usual top doubles team, the national powerhouse Pirates still employed one half of the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country. Muller-Wehlau, the No. 1 singles player in Division II, normally partners with Barbora Krtickova as the top ranked doubles team. The duo had lost to a team from Hawaii Pacific earlier on the day, perhaps calculated in the lineup change.
Another interesting change was at No. 1 singles, which prevented an anticipated match-up of two Germans in Preikschas and Muller-Wehlau. Filipovski, normally the team's No. 3 player, took on Preikschas. Filipovski, playing at No. 1 for the first time, beat Preikschas, 6-2, 6-3.
Coming off a tremendous victory on Monday, Eng moved up to No. 2 singles to take on No. 8 ranked Krtickova, but lost 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 5 singles,
Erin McGurty had an early 3-2 lead in the first set against 10th ranked Joanna Szymczyk before dropping a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
The Warriors dropped their overall record to 3-5, but of the five losses, two were against top five teams and the other two against Division I programs. AASU improved to 12-0.
Cal State Stanislaus wraps up its three-match trip against the nation's elite programs on Wednesday when the Warriors take on No. 7 Hawaii Pacific.
