TURLOCK — Fitzpatrick Arena wasn't the only thing that was hot Wednesday night. In a match that wasn't even supposed to be here, the Warriors were scroching on the attack and solid on defense as they upset Chico State.
With just six hitting errors on the night -- and five came in the third set -- the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team shocked Chico State in straight sets, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18. The Warriors were so on-fire that at one point in the third set they led 20-9.
Andrea Fett led the way with 12 kills on 27 swings with just three errors (.333 attacking percentage). Three Warriors --
Melissa Bishop (.357),
Janay Bankston (.304) and
Jennifer Marsh (.350) -- each had seven kills for the team effort offensively.
"We had so much energy and team chemisty, it's like a whole new Stanislaus team," Bishop said as the Warriors improved to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the CCAA.
As a team, Stanislaus had a .337 percentage with 41 kills on 104 attempts with just six errors. Through the first two sets, the Warriors were at 25-1-64 (.375) — yes, just one attacking error through the first two sets.
While the Warriors hit every shot in, Chico State was hitting its shots long, short, wide or in the net. The Wildcats ended up with 25 attacking errors. Chico (10-4, 4-3 CCAA) also had five service errors, four receiving errors and two blocking errors.
Up front, Stanislaus had nine team blocks with a solo and 16 assists — Bishop had five, Bankston four assisted and
Nicole Kincaide stuffed four total. While no one had double digits in digs, they tallied 42 — Fett and
Ashley Pittman each had nine.
"We shut them down on blocking and we took care of our angles, which was awesome," said Fett. "Our defense was phenomenal too, we had a lot of hard digs up."
Setter
Kendal Munoz chipped in four kills with two service aces and seven digs with two assists.
The match was a switch in the schedule. Stanislaus was supposed to go to Chico tonight but a gym floor issue caused the location swap. The Warriors will return to Chico on Nov. 7. Cal State Stanislaus will be on the road at Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay this weekend.
