Box Score TURLOCK — Perhaps the large Go Otters sign up in the stands was a motativing factor as a number of Warriors took offense and put up career numbers to spike Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night inside Fitzpatrick Arena.
A see-saw battle ended up in a tight fifth that favored the home team as Cal State Stanislaus won in five, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-12.
Senior
Andrea Fett led all players with 22 kills -- one shy of her career best -- and
Janay Bankston, another senior, put-away 18 on her best night. Seniors
Jennifer Marsh and
Melissa Bishop contributed with 14 kills and six blocks, respectively.
So the quartette is turning this final home weekend into Senior Weekend instead of the traditional Senior Night, which is Saturday night at 7 p.m. when the Warriors host Cal State East Bay.
Bankston came up big late in the match. Just as when the Otters were putting up blocks against Stanislaus's top weapon in Fett, setter
Kendal Munoz found the hot arm of Bankston. The senior from Denair put away 11 of her 18 in the fourth and fifth sets. She had five in the fifth, including the final two Stanislaus points for the victory.
Bankston finished with a .484 hitting night with 18 kills on 31 swings with just three errors.
Cal State Stanislaus improved its record to 8-19 overall and 5-14 in the CCAA after its second straight solid performance. Wednesday night at Chico, the Warriors played well before falling short to the Wildcats.
While the seniors were putting shots away or stuffing Otter attacks, a freshman also starred in the match. Munoz recorded 57 assists — the fourth best single-match performance by a Warrior and the best by a rookie. Munoz has now recorded 101 assists in two matches so far this week. Her 870 assists this season is already No. 6 on the single season top 10 list.
Also with big nights were libero
Ashley Pittman, who tied her career-best with 24 digs.
Jaclyn Pinasco had 17 for her second best match in that category. Munoz and
Eva Chafeh each also picked up 12 digs.
Cal State Monterey Bay, which had fans sporting large CSUMB Go Otters banners across the top of the bleachers, lost its 13th straight CCAA match on the road to fall to 12-14 overall and 6-12 in the CCAA. Janai Johnson had 16 kills and Julia Ashen 15 to lead the Otters.
