Box Score TURLOCK — For most of the first half, the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors stayed ahead of a highly regarded Grand Canyon team before fading away late in the game. In the end, the 18th ranked Antelopes pulled away with an 82-64 win Monday night.
Judy Jones, already a two-time PacWest player of the week, put-up 15 of her 23 points in the second half to lead Grand Canyon to improve its record to 8-2. The Antelopes extended their win-streak to seven games. Jones, who was 7 of 11 from the field and made nine free throws, also notched a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Cal State Stanislaus (0-7) was led by
Briana Cotton with 15 points off the bench.
Lauren Godde scored 11 points with seven rebounds aand
Erin Godde pulled eight boards to go with her 10 points. It was the second straight game that Cotton has led the team in scoring as the sophomore guard made six of her 10 shot attempts.
However, the 'Lopes' ability to nail three-pointers and the Warriors' inability to make free throws appeared to be the differences in the game. Grand Canyon also out-rebounded the much-smaller Warriors, 45-29.
Grand Canyon made nine treys to pull away while the Warriors were sent to the free throw line early and often. Stanislaus was in double-bonus situation at 10:40 to go but were just 5 of 11 down the stretch. For the game, the Warriors were 12 for 23 from the free throw line (10 of 19 in the second half) for 52.2 percent.
Still, the Warriors out-shot the Antelopes from the field 46.3 to 42.2 percent thanks largely to a strong first half. The Warriors led for the first 16 minutes of the game with a cushion as large as eight, at 14-6, with 12:48 to go on a Cotton basket. Stanislaus led by seven as late as 8:40 on a Cotton triple which made it 22-15.
Erica Paskell hit a couple of three-pointers for GCU late in the first half to allow them a slight 33-32 halftime lead. Paskell finished with four three-pointers and 16 points.
Next up for the Warriors is a road game at Chico State on Saturday, Nov. 15. The Wildcats are 6-0 overall, 3-0 in the CCAA before a game against Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday.
