TURLOCK — Playing with a lot of heart and determination, the Cal State Stanislaus women's tennis team successfully defeated its home courts with a 7-2 win over Academy of Art on Sunday.
The Warriors, now 3-1 on the season, have now won seven straight home matches (including a scrimmage win earlier this month) dating back to last season. They are now 16-3 at the CSUS Tennis Courts since the program was reinstated and began play again in 2009. All three home losses were against powerhouse UC San Diego.
Against a solid Academy of Art team, which narrowly lost 5-4 to UC San Diego on Feb. 12, the Warriors knew they would be challenged.
With a goal of trying to win the three points from doubles competition, the Warriors came up just short with a well-played tough loss at No. 3 with a 8-6 decision in favor of the Urban Knights (3-5).
Stanislaus won at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with a superb performance by the No. 2 team of
Davina Meza and
Kelsey Chrisco, easily downing their opponents, 8-1.
In singles play, the Warriors won five of the six matches -- all in straight sets.
Katie Eng beat her opponent Amal Ben El Hadj the quickiest with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Fifth ranked (nationally)
Verena Preikschas handled Kunkanda Phukchampa (who is ranked No. 17 in the region), 6-2, 6-3 for the fourth point.
Meza, a freshman from New Zealand, then scored the decisive fifth team point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jenny Johansson to secure the win.
McKenzy Harden and
Heather Cotter both out-lasted their opponents in two close matches at No. 5 and No. 6 for the final count.
