Tennis opens with 9-0 salting of Slugs

TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus women's tennis team successfully open the 2012 spring campaign with a 9-0 blanking of UC Santa Cruz on Saturday.

The Warriors were led by their two All-Americans as well as some newcomers, needing just one extra set to dispose the Banana Slugs. UC Santa Cruz is ranked No. 21 in NCAA Division III and is coming off a 5-4 narrow loss against Sonoma State.

Heather Cotter and McKenzy Harden won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles and both won their respective singles matches at No. 5 and No. 6. At No. 6 singles, Aubree Brenda shutout her opponent, Becca Pancer, 6-0, 6-0.

Newcomers Kelsey Chrisco, a junior college transfer, and freshman Devina Meza won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. After making her collegiate debut in doubles play, Meza won her first singles match at No. 3, 6-3, 6-0, over UCSC's Courtney Iymburne.

Three-time All-American Verena Preikschas again led the way atop of the lineup with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over Alex Scotten. Preikschas is ranked No. 15 in Division II entering the season. Katie Eng beat Laura Wade, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7, in the long match of the day at No. 2 singles.

The All-American duo of Preikschas and Eng also won their No. 1 doubles match, 8-4, over Alex Scotten and Wade.
