LA JOLLA — For seniors
Verena Preikschas and
Katie Eng, Wednesday's 6-3 win over Warriors' nemesis UC San Diego was extra-special. And they have their young teammates to thank.
Since the program's reinstatement the one team the Warriors, and coach
Verek Visaraga, have not been able to hang a W over was the Tritons. That streak ended on Wednesday as the Warriors rebounded from a tough loss at Cal State L.A. on Tuesday with the victory.
When women's tennis was a CCAA sport, Cal State Stanislaus finished second to UC San Diego back-to-back years in the Warriors' first two years (2009, 2010).
"I am really proud of them as they were able to bounce back from a tough loss," Visaraga said. "It was emotionally draining (last night), today was special. The girls played really well, especially at No. 2 doubles (
Davina Meza and
Kelsey Chrisco) and McKenzy (Harden)."
Led by the two seniors — Preikschas and Eng — at No. 1 doubles, the No. 33 ranked Warriors took two of three in team-play taking wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles for the early lead over the 21st ranked Tritons.
Cal State Stanislaus recorded wins at No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 singles with wins by freshman
Davina Meza at No. 2 and sophomore
McKenzy Harden at No. 5.
Interestingly, the Warriors' Tuesday loss was a first against a Sandy Kriezel coached team (Cal Poly Pomona or Cal State L.A.).
